The rumour at ITN's headquarters in Gray's Inn Road is that Alastair Stewart, the newscaster, is the bosses' choice to anchor the next general election. Jonathan Dimbleby has anchored every election for the station since 1997, but, as one insider put it, Alastair is "now at the top of his game".
Stewart is honing his inquisitorial skills presenting a new ethics programme, The Moral of the Story. The programme launches tomorrow night, and, as a panellist on it, I can vouch for Stewart's unfaltering professionalism — and wit.
Technical glitches added an hour to the recording of the first programme in the series. When the novelist Dave Hill, who took part in the second programme, said he was worried about missing his daughter's school Christmas disco, Stewart quipped: "The way things are going, you may miss Christmas altogether."
