I think the trouble Mark has now is that the two programmes have key differences, with the Evening News supposedly more accessable, while the Nightly News (though they never did officially change it back) is a bit more heavyweight.
I think Mark does can comfortably fit into either category, but not everynight.
Mark Austin is not a 'cockney' nor is he in anyway reminiscent of one. What an odd thing to say.
People here take things so literally, get real. I mean, his delivery is too alarmist/extreme at times and adds his own spin on things far too often. His accent, as I had said, okay, it isn't a conventional ''newsreader'' one, or ''received pronunciation'' for the literate amongst you, and I must admit to being shallow that that grates on my nerves. His accent makes him incredulous at times and I just can't take him seriously.
think i know what you are trying to get at - are you saying he's a tad too hammy or something?
I prefer James presenting the news rather than Mark. I would like to see James as the regular presenter of the News at 10.30 five nights a week with Mark presenting the ITV News at 6.30pm with Mary.

Not sure that's ever going to happen! I'd rather see Alastair presenting the 10.30.
Personally I'd keep Mark on the 10.30pm and leave Mary to host the 6.30pm bulletin alone.
Mark would still appear on the Evening News as Mary's stand-in (so about four nights a week then!), and also anchoring on location with Mary in the studio.
News at 10:30pm should be -
Monday to Wednesday: Alistar Stewart
Thursday and Friday: James Mates
They're both good presenters.
and stick Mark on the evening news - and see if he can managed FIVE days a week. Instead of two or four.
