Yet another problem...Mary was giving a recap of the headlines, during that, we get a still of John Mackay (Scotland Today), then we don't get the headlines from Central Scotland. WTF is going on?

Calm it Garry. Just because your region isn't up to scratch, don't assume everybody cares, because we don't.

You are such a cheeky little boy! P*** off!!!
And, I don't need to calm down, I wasn't angry, I was curious.

That sort of thing used to happen quite frequently, even back in the days of McDonald and Suchet, when the local opt outs were encapsulated into the main ITN bulletin for the first time.

I recall a similar occurrence many years ago when ITN was on air (Trevor, I think), and suddenly we got around forty seconds of Nick Dixon in the STV studio (or rather the top of his head) as he was, also, scribbling on his script.

What is that thing that the duty newscaster often has on his desk during the short regional programmes, like a black box which he/she clearly presses to get sound or cameras to work? Does that same black box also control the opt out/in too? (daft question and wrong thread, I know, but may as well see if someone knows.....)

That's to control the autocue I think?

aha, I see, like the pedal that is preferred by some broadcasters! I remember many years ago, John Suchet used to do a live link to Shereen Nanjiani and Angus Simpson at the end of Lunchtime ST, to give a briefing of what was coming up on the Early Evening News. Did any other ITV region ever do the same thing? It was clearly live and personalised, as Suchet used to use the linkers name whilst he was talking to them, whether it be Nanjiani, Simpson, Lumsden, or whomever.

Slightly different subject, Garry, - but who is Mark Austin's deputy on the Late News when Austin is away or on location?

Seems to be Alastair Stewart who was in the Middle East all last week. And vastly superior it was too, he really should have got the 10.30.

Many people fill in for Mark on the News at 10.30, but it is usually either Alastair or James Mates.

I looked forward to the reports from Alistair from Beirut, but I don't since Mark Austin.

It's to control BDL (autocue).
The presenter can use the hand control or the foot pedal to control the scrolling of the script.
But the hand control also allows the presenter more flexibility to skip forward or backwards to other scripts in the running order.
The presenter doesn't control lights or cameras - that's all done by the gallery.
