Has the 8pm hour permanently reverted to a single presenter?

Yesterday and today both Steve and Felicity have been back, but it's been Felicity on her own at 8pm both days.

The News Channel slowly seems to be getting back to full strength after the Christmas break (and the Tsunami coverage).

Yesterday Steve Scott was back and today Lucy Alexander has returned.

Also, has the News Channel settled its dispute with GMTV re sharing material? I just saw Sue Jameson reporting from Oban.

In other news Carol Barnes has been barred as a magistrate

They had a reduced line up this afternoon-

1.00 Heather McCarthy (in the second studio)
2.00 Heather McCarthy (in the second studio)
3.00 Nina Hossian

No idea why Nick, Steve and Mark couldn't pair up with them in their usual slots today.

Well they can only have one presenter in the second studio.

Technical problems? Early rehearsals for the new-look Lunchtime News?

id imagine its because both Steve and Mark were in Asia recently and the way ITN works is something like for every unsocial hour they work they get an hour off there normal hours. There probably just making time up, probs be like this for the rest of the week.

Also, now five news has gone I think the ITV News Channel should get it's own studio. Nothing to flash - just a similar layout to the main studio without the newswall. They'd get a couple of plasma screens and a standard CSO screen for reports. This would enable them to have a less disrupted schedule in the lead up to the news, with regular presenters in from 10.00-12.30, 4.00-6.30 and 8.00-10.30.

Interesting idea, but where would it go?
I suppose they could use the old five news studio, but this would be so much smaller than the current main ITV News studio.

The only other options would be to either convert the second main studio that is currently the big CSO set, or to jump ahead of sky's game and do the Channel 5 News '97 idea and do up a newsroom, maybe even the old five news room now that they've gone and broadcast either from the newsroom, or convert the newsroom or part of it into a studio.

It would add more to the channel if they had their own studio, hopefully one day they may have. Plus with teletext coming to the channel soon, if they could get the line up fixed, and make the agenda different to other news channels, and maybe tweak the graphics and you'd have a lovely looking news channel to attract the viewers.

Maybe another point (perhaps more when they've got their own studio) would be to cross over to the News Channel Presenter/s at the end of an ITV1 programme to find out what's coming up on the News Channel.

Plus on the weather front, couldn't they hire more weather forecasters or increase the hours so that you'd have two weather forecasters working each day instead of one.

How do Sky News go about it?

Moving the NC out of their new studio would be a big step backwards. I dont think ITV would be able to improve on their current studio. What ITV NC needs to do, is make full use of that newswall, and not just use the four blocks picture background, because its a waste. Go back to when it first relaunched, with the top story taking the main background with the four squares.

They use many more full-size story backgrounds now - both still and animated - than they did at the time of the relaunch.

Agree with that, the way they use it is very disapointing. They could at least use the whole wall to play out an image, or a few images, or use a few different backgrounds, even if it was just a simple gradient.

I wouldn't specifically say that another studio would ruin it. It they had a big space that they could fill with different presenting areas it may add something to the channel rather than take it away.

This is a subjective topic, but based on the hours that each channel uses the main studio, the News Channel DO have their own studio - it's just that ITV1 programmes also come from there throughout the day! Whether they use it well is another matter, but for the News Channel to move to "it's own" studio and not have the massive news wall would be a completely self-limiting exercise. They'd lose all the resources of the wall, the option to use it, and the very thing that makes the ITV News studio distinctive.

And why would they want to convert the old ITV studio which is currently their CSO set-up into another News Channel studio? With their virtual technology, they can make it look exactly like the main studio - it's almost a precise replica. It looks like it does have limitations, but I wonder whether the average viewer notices...

I don't think most viewers notice the difference when it comes to the look of the channel when in the smaller studio. It becomes a lot more static in all respects - from what i've seen they could easily have 2 presenters at that desk - they can also do quite wide shots. I think viewers are mainly confused at the change of presenters at half past the hour - it just seems silly. The news channel just needs better shift patterns and to carry on until midnight! A paper review at 11.45 would be nice!

On a different matter, overnights: it has been discussed ad hoc on this thread, but there has been comments if the News Channel shown ITV1 news repeats: "There's only so many times you can repeat [on the NC], Tonight with Trevor McDonald" - well, that is true. But, also, ITV has a wealth of current affairs programmes they could use.
Programmes like:
World In Action. Presented by Roger Cook.
Police,Camera, Action! BRILLIANT programme, with Alastair Stewart.
Tonight with Trevor McDonald.
and...
D-Day Dispatches. I loved this programme when it was shown on ITV1 in June last year.
Presented by John Suchet with:
Michael Nicholson
Angela Rippon HOME AFFAIRS CORRESPONDENT
Robert Moore WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
Alastair Stewart DEFENCE CORRESPONDENT
Colin Baker DEFENCE ANALYST
John Stapleton

A brilliant programme, with loads of acting.
