I think that may be missing the point somewhat. This was less 'serious news' and more propoganda.
The timing is certainly suspect, but how on earth do you know whether it was propaganda or not? The problem is that if it was propaganda peddled by Downing Street then it certainly is "less serious news" and almost more of an observation than fact. If it wasn't propaganda and a genuine threat or attack attempt has been thwarted then it's not just "serious news", it's a very major story indeed. The story is either nothing or a very big deal. The difficulty is that we may never know which.

Well, ITV News has a duty to promote serious news whether it will be a suspected possible terrorist attack prevention or a Royal death.

Elinor Goodman was questioning the timing and content of the ITV News story on Channel 4 News at Noon - though she referred to "News at Ten" as the source of the story...
She said that both the Mail and ITV News insist that they have known about this for a while but chose to run it now because it tied in with the content of the Queen's Speech, not because of any other motive.
The Register has a very sceptical take on it all:
www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/23/terror_scare_spin
It's easy to be cynical about these things, but on the other hand the Daily Mail certainly isn't known for dancing to the government's tune by running stories when it suits them.
And the story is certainly all too plausible and there is a clear danger of complacency about the terror threat. It ties in with what people like Sir John Stevens have been saying for months - and fits with the deployment of tanks at Heathrow last year.
On another note, I thought ITV News did well with its coverage of the State Opening this morning. For those interested in the ceremonial etc it was a better choice than the BBC One coverage which kept going back to Huw's panel of guests in a Lords' committee room (and their competition to win a teddy bear and a copy of IDS's novel!)

If the BBC had broke this story on the 10pm News or Newsnight would you have made these comments - I think not.
It's not a surprising story really, but a very worthy story. It was also made very clear in Nick Robinsons report that it wasn't officially confirmed, but based on what a source had told him - and that he'd been looking into the story for the last few days.
Also, last night on ITV1 during the 10pm Corrie was the first time I've seen the 10.30pm bulletin trailed since the weeks following it's launch.

ITV-1 News At 10.30 appears to be carrying a lead story no-one else is carrying about a plot to fly planes into Canary Wharf being thwarted. I can't find this item on the BBC News pages and I feel sure it has already been mentioned some time ago. Does this not degrade the credibility of ITV News?

Oh grow up. When did he show any evidence of being biased against any news organisation?

I was flicking around the Queen's Speech coverage earlier where the actual ceremony seemed to be a pooled feed between all three News Channels.
SKY¦News had The Queen squashed into the small band on the left (everytime I saw it) with large graphics on the main portion of the screen. ITV News opted for a similar layout but with afull view of the action but smaller on the left. Sorry but I cant remember the layout for BBC News 24.
ITV news Channel stuck with The Queen's Speech until 12:30 Lunchtime News with Alastair Stewart presenting/commenting live from the green outside Westminster.
After the 12:30 Lunchtime News there was the LIVE press conference with The Osbornes which SKY¦News also carried but for some reason was 30 seconds behind ITV's coverage even though they both carried a LIVE dog in the corner!
Leyla Deybelge presented from 13:00 with numerous guests and live location interviews concerning The Queen's Speech. They even had time to fit a quick interview with Sian Lloyd concerning the weather around 13:40! lol
Quite a watchable day of tv on ITVNC today - I wonder what the 15:00 hour will be like?

ITV viewers even got a brief glimpse of Huw Edwards and his guests at one point....

I thought Alastair Stewart and the constitutional expert Vernon Bogdanor did an excellent job.

Sky probably used a profanity delay in case Ozzy or Sharon said something unbroadcastable.

Sharon only said "p1ss" once. Also TV Chef, Keith Floyd, also said the same word on the ITV West News at Lunchtime!
Two "p1sses" within 15 minutes!
