I gather Mary Njghtingale has gone on her pregnancy leave and I bet Andrea Catherwood will be the female presenter of the Evening News. Possibly with Katie Derham?

According to reports, Nina Hossain.

This is just a thought, but ITN have had control over Channel 5/five news over the last 7 years, but I wonder why they haven't used ITV news faces on. They used to in the early days of Channel 4 News when they used to have people like John Suchet on C4 News in the 1980's, but again, I wonder why this hasn't be the case for the TV station five. Does anyone know why?

Presumably because for many years now the networks in each case have been keen to brand their particular news programme with their 'own' faces and presenters. I suspect it's not really the case that ITN have "had control over Channel 5/five news over the last 7 years". Surely ITN are merely the news service provider. The client - and real 'controlling' party - is the network. I can't envisage any of the three commercial terrestrial networks being happy that 'their' news presenters are used on a programme from another (competing) station.

How come then, so many 5 newsreaders are moving over to ITV News and presenting there, and presenting at the same time on five, e.g. Louisa Preston?

Times have changed in broadcasting, for instance when Channel 4 launched in 1982 it was seen more as an ITV2 and ITN also got to produce the News, so I guess that they weren't too bothered who presented Channel 4 News, as it was produced by ITN and they did always use to cross promote each other. Though when Channel 4 News started it wasn't as major as it was now, the first couple of years were very shaky and wasn't very established, the main presenters in the early days were mainly Peter Sissons, Alastair Stewart, Trevor McDonald and Nicholas Owen.

Though as I said times have changed and Broadcasting has moved on, Channel 4 is no longer related to ITV and it is now well established in it's own style (that obviously being the News) but Channel 5 was announced to start and ITN managed to win the contract.

Though the ITN of 1982 is different of the ITN of the 2000's, in the old days it was ran by all of the ITV companies, but it is now ran by a few major shareholders mainly being ITV Plc and Retuers. Also remember that ITN is one of the biggest News organisations across the world and needs to compete, it is also a business which it wants to expand hence why they managed to win the C5 contract, they managed to win the ITV contract when it was renewed a couple of years ago, and obviously took the ITV London contract no problem.

When Sky takes over Five News in January I wouldn't expect much cross promotion to Sky News, maybe the odd use of reporters but I wouldn't expect any major presenters or references. (for example tune to Sky News for more)

Good question, and one that really warrants it's own thread to gets the answers it deserves...

I guess with the ITN/Five contract coming to an end they don't care any more about those who are disappearing from Five at the end of the year appearing on a rival broadcaster's minor digital news channel in the interim.

Alastair Stewart is used quite heavily on the News Channel. He covers almost every major news story [that's OK for me] but why is he always on the NC and never ITV1. I know he has be on ITV1 twice for the US Presidential Elections and the British By-Elections in June and he's on right now with Yasser Arafat's funeral.

It is about time we saw Alastair and Andrew Harvey as regulars on ITV1 News because they are well-known now for more than 20 years and even an old granny will know who they are, more than Katie Derham, when Katie does the 10.30.

It's ridiculous that Andrew Harvey is now presenting on a news channel instead of a main network bulletin. After all, he did front the Six O'clock News for many years during the 1980s and 1990s - surely that makes him eligible for the main ITV1 bulletins?

The same goes for Martyn Lewis really, although I know he's not at ITN. He was one of the main newscasters on the Six O'clock News, and he's now disappeared off the face of the Earth! Does anyone know what he's up to?

He's now a director/chairman of a large corporation or business i think.

As for your thoughts, well, look at Peter Sissons from the BBC!

Equally, when was the last time we saw Angela Rippon or Carol Barnes on a main news bulletin?

Apparently he was dropped from the BBC News presenting team because he was critical of the agenda on BBC News bulletins - too much of the news was bad news, he said.
