Mark Webster may well be a nice bloke, but he is not by any stretch of the imagination a "good newscaster".

All too often he looks like a frightened rabbit caught in the headlights.

I get the feeling the opening greeting is not on the autocue so it is supposed to be adlibbed. The likes of Chris Rogers and Owen Thomas are very good at adlibbing openings, links to adverts etc. Mark Webster just stares at the camera for two seconds and then starts to read the first story!

It's Trevor McDonalds 65th birthday today.

I take it he won't be working Laughing

Believe it or not ...... no ! Very Happy Nick Owen is on all week I believe.

Lol, I've hardly seen Trevor for the last few weeks. I haven't tuned in every night, but the last time I saw him was before my holiday in early July. Since I got back, I've seen Mark Austin, Mary Nightingale and a few others stand in for him. He seems to have an awfully large amount of time off, doesn't he?

Does anyone know the technical reason for the presenter's reflection appearing in the desk of the new improved CSO second studio but not the backdrop, as per the main studio?

Compare these caps from OWAN:

I wouldn't have noticed the difference unless we compare like we are doing so now!

I think they have done a great job in trying to achieve a similar look but the give away is the reflection.

You can also tell its the CSO because the cameras dont move either! They are all static shots where the background can animate if required

That sure will be interesting - Nicholas Owen newsreads live from Boscastle, Cornwall tonight at 6.30pm - I think Nick has never done that before as a newsreader.

The main camera angle in the new second set has moved, zoomed in slightly, and the wall behind does or did reflect in the desk, in the side view.

Nicholas Owen has done a walking-to-different-places report from the flooded scene of Cornwall.
Also, can I say - let's have a vote - what is better..... ITN or ITV News?

Also Phil Gayle is starting to get better! <insert comment here>

You what???!! Phil Gayle is as annoying as Linda Barker.

They should give Owen Thomas much more airtime. Oh, and it's ITV News for me, not ITN.

ITV News, sounds more modern. ITN, A bit old fashioned for me!

Looking at the lack of reflection in the desk just now, I wonder if the image added to the desk along with the presenter's reflection is supposed to make the desk look see-through, and it's supposed to give the illusion of the walkway and platform behind the desk?

It's the right kind of shape, but I don't think it quite works - it doesn't look right.

I suppose it gives depth to the image, but they'd be better making it match the main studio by using the reflection from the newswall.

That's got me thinking - I miss the days when they used to have the announcement at the start of the programme: "From the studios of ITN, the ITV Evening News, with XXXX and XXXX..." I wish they would go back to that, although I couldn't see a way they could integrate it with the three portions of title that they currently use.
