I know it's taped overnight, but I always assumed that the overnight presenter makes their first appearance at 12am

They do a bulletin every night at 11.30 with full titles which is then repeated at 12 and 12.30.

Sometimes the overnight presenter appears at 11 or 11.30 so they do that bulletin, at other times it is done by whoever is on the evening shift (eg Joyce Ohajah on weekdays)

Usually the overnight person first appears with the short summary at 1am, which is followed by repeats of the 10.30 on weeknights and repeats from 11.30 on other nights, through to the Morning News at 5.30.

This week will be different though, with live coverage from the Republican Convention between 1am and 4am.

I wonder why there is an ad break in tonight's Evening News?

Is this going to be a regular thing?

The film ' Twister ' is on at 8pm, which is unusual, so I would imagine it has something to do with it.

Julian Manyon has moved quickly - yesterday he was in Jerusalem, today he's in Moscow.

I know we all wanted double headed bulletins - but i have to say when certain presenters are on its quite nice to just have the 1, it's like they're talking to you. Leyla Deybelge is particularly good on her own, through watching the last 2 days of major breaking news this is evident. I wonder if the news channel has more new plan to move the channel on again - it's a good time of year to do it as the channel has settled down well. I wish they'd have a better schedule and ditch the simulcasts.

Yes, I agree about Leyla. Owen is also very good at talking to the viewer, not at them. Though he's good with a co-presenter too.

Re. moving the channel on - I hope we do see some more developments to the schedule. Next week would be a good time, as I guess Felicity may be back. And I think Angela is back the weekend after next.

John Nicolson made a rather cryptic comment at the end of the Pilger phone-in about more documentaries coming up next week - not sure what that was about.

Things i'd like to see...
1) More phone-in's - something the itvnc is good at - they used to do it a lot pre-relaunch at 1pm - they could like it to the 'Your Say' survey
2)I wish they'd let presenters sign off at the end of the hour - especially if the presenters change - I liked it when the news channel first became itv when the following presenter sat at the desk and said what was coming up - would be nice to see Steve Felicity and Leyla round the desk - they could then have a proper end to the bulletin.
3)The evenings could do with a make-over. They SOMETIMES do ents news at 7 - sometimes with a guest - then at other times they focus on sport - i know it follows on the the evening news but it would be nice to see a more rigid schedule - maybe a half hour showbiz programme at 7.30pm?
4) Have a full live hour at 11pm with a paper review - every night!

Yes - and I think the 7pm hour could do with two presenters. It is odd to suddenly return (usually) to a double-headed bulletin at 8.

As the News Channel is promoted on ITV1 at the end of the Evening News, it's a shame that the hour that follows doesn't show off the full potential of the channel, with two presenters, newswall presentations and suchlike.

Agreed. Though I find the repeats of PMQs and the like at 11 quite useful.

Other things I'd like to see:

1) Regular specialist shows in the evening - they could use the 8.30 slot every night in the style of US Election Weekly - along these lines:
Monday - Sports news and debate with Steve, Felicity, Alex Thomas, Tim Ewart et al
Tuesday - Media
Wednesday - Politics
Thursday - US Election Weekly
Friday - Sports Extra

2) A Friday edition of the ITV News Network - it's mad that it's only on 4 nights a week - move Sports Extra to 8.30.

3) Some kind of double-headed feature-led weekend evening show - maybe 7-9 or 7-10. A lot of the repeated material from Angela's show is getting stale by that time.

Interesting thoughts about how the ITV News Channel can develop. I've added my own thoughts in a new thread to avoid this being hidden here:

The 10.30 started very late this evening.

I see Neil Connery is now in Moscow, with Julian Manyon in Beslan.

It's a shame that ITV News's international resources are so stretched that a big story in Russia leaves the Africa and Middle East bureaux without any cover.

Still - not bad to start the 10.30 with three international lives - Manyon in Beslan, Connery in Moscow and now Robert Moore in New York.
