Yes, I suppose because of the Condoleezza interview with Trevor which is being shown in full on the News at 10.30.

Lookaround finished at 6.27 tonight and had a commercial break before the 6.30. Did other regions do this ? Or was this just Border ?

Anyway they were really struggling for news tonight, they even replayed a report from last nights Lookaround !!

I'm glad they have the desk lit up in blue again, it looked better like that.

So is it the regular 'second studio' [anyone know the proper name for it?] that we are seeing today, just used more creatively?

Or is it studio 1 with a desk plonked in the middle?

I think you've answered your own question in the Election thread!

Is studio 2 the old ITV1 news studio that's currently used for the briefings? Or is it the main ITV1 news studio now? I get easily confused.

Studio 2 is the home of the 'theatre of news'. Studio 1 is the full VR studio.

Meridian Tonight had a break before the Evening News, I don't know why though?

A lot of effort went into the NC's presentation and Lunchtime News just to replace a light in the desk... or was there more? Was the Morning News in the main studio today?

They've also forgotten to add a blue tint to the floor in the virtual studio

What is the other studio being used for?

Election rehearsals.

that seems logical, but wouldn't Alastair Stewart be involved in election rehearsals?

Technical rehearsals don't necessarily involve presenters.

Who co-hosted the Evening News with Nina then if she led it?

Are they screening tonight's Harold Shipman documentary without ads - possible explanation for the extra ads during the news.

It was Nina & Mark as usual...

In London Tonight they say the presenters with the first names (e.g. The national and internation news with Bill and Nina), but in Meridian Tonight they say the presenters full names (e.g. The ITV Evening News with Bill Neely and Nina Hussain). What do the other regions do?

Now that we have seen that the 2nd studio can be used for 2 presenters and guests, I can't seen any reason why the news channel can't come from there all the time - this would at least allow better presenter schedules. They could do...
6 - 10 / 10 - 12.30 / 1 - 4 / 4 - 6.30 / 7 - 10.30

I was thinking the same, they are obviously capable of providing a reasonable service, they can do all that they can in the main studio, infact that can do more, they could extend the wall, have visuals popping up out of the floor, even have the floor moving if they wanted it to, I just don't understand why they don't make more use of it. Hopefully this will be the start of things to come.

the only problem that I can majorly see as a problem for the second studio is the reflection in the desk.
Is there anyway that they could get around this?
I'm not sure how myself yet, but is there anyway? Is there any glass available?

What if they had tinted glass, then wouldn't the green from the wall come out a different colour when reflected?
I know it doesn't solve the problem, but it's better than have the walkway appear through the desk.

Why would ITV NC use the second set all the time? For one, its compleley virtual and the presenters wont know where they are looking, and its a waste of the proper news studio. I dont think ITV News would have spent 1 million pound just for it to be used on ITV1.

Probably becuase there won't be one in the News at 10.30 ( although there is only one in the News at 10.30 once or twice a week now ), because there is a special interview with Condoleezza Rice, which will probably be quite long. Maybe the 10.30 will be slightly longer than usual.

No, that's not quite what I'm asking!

I was working on the basis that the 'second studio' used on a daily basis by the News Channel is not Studio 1, but elsewhere (? next to the newsroom) in the building.

Well I was very impressed with the effort they made to keep the News Channel operating normally despite the fact the main studio was unavailable to them.

This morning was particularly good. And doing so much complicated stuff with just two cameras must have kept the gallery crew on their toes.

I hope we see more dual-anchored presentation from the second studio - though I wouldn't want the News Channel to use it more than strictly necessary as it doesn't look as good as the 'real thing'.

But it's a great step forward that whenever the NC is booted out of studio 2 they are no longer limited to one presenter sitting behind a desk with two (as good as) fixed cameras.

Though I notice that there is only one computer in the desk (and one keyboard and mouse) so the other presenter had to use the tablet PC on the desk for the running order etc.

Anyway, they desperately need to be able to keep the quality of the service more consistent, and today was an impressive step towards that.

I suppose we shall have a good few more days like today between now and the election.
