I think that ITV News has actually "got a grip" with today's technology, and is making use of it, as they have taken the stance that the viewer's opinion is important to the structure of their show.
There is no question about it, BBC News will have an element of interactivity within a few years time, as this introduction of opinion has lowered the "barrier" further between the presenter and the viewer.
But when does a NEWS programme more of a daytime talkshow (eg. This Morning)? Whilst interaction is good the primary aim should be in presenting the news.

I'm not a fan of this forced chuminess that the newsreaders are trying to do with the audience, it just seems out of place on a news programme. The ITV Evening News doesn't seem to do this as much as their Lunchtime bulletin and is all the better for it.
The Six O'Clock News doesn't do it that much, but it's a shadow of its former self, the authority is gone and Alagiah reads the news like he's talking to a class full of children.
Katie Derham really irritates me in how she does the news, she doesn't speak like a newsreader more like somebody that should be doing some other daytime show on ITV. I do like her but I think she should be more serious.

I think the key is that, for better or for worse, it's a daytime show, designed to fit in with ITV day.
Katie has presented the 6:30 and 10:30 and neither featured significant interactive elements or the associated "chumminess". Though presenters do have differing styles I would have thought that something so fundamental is dictated from above, possibly by ITN but more probably by ITV.
Today has been the first time that I have had the opportunity to watch the programme in its entirety and I actually quite like it.
Viewer feedback sections are always a bit hit-and-miss as there is no guarantee that the respondents' opinions are of any interest whatsoever, though they were sufficiently brief and are unlikely to feature so prominently after the election.
I agree that the
Outsider
item worked well; given the initial wobbly shots that explained Katie's slightly rueful smile behind the "hold on to your hats, this could be a bumpy ride" introduction I was a little apprehensive, but once we got into the piece it was interesting and represented good use of a camcorder. (BTW, it looks as if this item is being repeated on the ITV News Channel).
Still not a fan of the hour-long programme. I didn't mind taking 20 minutes or so to catch up on the latest news before, but now I'm generally turning off after the bongs!
In half-an-hour five do the Lunchtime News much better, beginning with a summary, then the top story and a couple of features.
Another thing I don't like is the impact on the 10.55 / 11.55 bulletins. Half of them is taken up pleading for you to Text / E-Mail for Ballot Box Jury.
P.S. Not seen it mentioned, but This Morning now also cross over to the newsroom (office, not studio!) to see what's coming up on the Lunchtime News at around 11.30am.
Can anyone upload anything from last week or this coming weeks lunchtime news please, as I missed the show on Friday and will do for a lot of this coming week?
Thanks
I'm recording the LN tommorow, so I'll upload some RAMs for you...
I expect Nina will move the Lunchtime, Leyla Daybelge or Joyce Ohajah will do LT & Mary will take back the Evening. But if they move Nina off the Evening - she might leave...
