As I thought - a longer news bulletin means... less news!
No where near as good as the pretty pacy early-afternoon bulletin it replaces, thought as I said we won't really get to see it properly until after the election.
The desk is hidious - just doesn't look right in the studio. As well as the wrong shape it's far too big - I was in fact expecting the desk may be dropped completly from the bulletin in favour of just the sofas.
The background is a bit pointless as well.
I weren't expecting any big changes to the look - but I thought they might change the 4 squares to match the ITV Day colour - though I guess if they do that they have to do it to all the regions.
I wonder if the background will remain for the Evening News.

The content was just as I expected really, the first 25 minutes was the main news, slightly more than previously and still with the break around 12:42, then after the 2nd break the lighter more interactive features started, with a 3rd break around 1.05. Another feature and then into the extended Regional News at 1.10 with a headline recap at 1.25.
The new desk is nothing to do with it really, its just a coincidence that it appeared on the same day
I'm sure they will get better and the show will get slicker, remember just as they were rehersing the pope went and died and the wedding moved to Saturday so they've hardly had 5 minutes to concentrate on the new bulletin. Nick covers up the mistakes well though and makes a joke out of them

Well I thought it worked really well overall. I knew that they would mess up with the Ballot Box Jury segment but im sure once they have done it a few times it will be fine. The 'Life Matters' segment was just basically the days medical story packaged in a different way. The regional bulletin was much better than before with the extra time.
Also it didn't really feel like an hour - which was (IMO) a good thing as I was thinking an hour might be too long. As for them having three breaks- that was kind of inevitable with them getting an hour slot as ITV were hardly going to drop a break from the hour.

Don't know if it's been posted already, but here it is again anyway for those that just want to see.

My impressions:
Good:
Lighter newswall background doesnt make the set seem quite so sterile and gloomy;
Good partnership between Owen and Derham
not much else
Bad:
Constant plugging of the ballot box jury details, about 5 or 6 times, and only 2 viewer comments were read out in the end! ;
Hugely dumbed down news content;
Awful desk - totally wrong size and shape for the rest of the studio;
Two ad breaks in a short time period;
'Body Politics' - who cares what some 'expert' thinks in only a couple of sound bites?
Overall pretty poor, and another wasted opportunity from ITV news. I dread to think how theyre going to fill the hour once the election is over, and the news channel loses yet more time as a proper breaking news channel, lowering further its credibility. Why not use the extra time to quiz the politicians more (but obviously not to a newsnight standard)? Ch4 news at noon is a much shorter bulletin produced on a much tighter budget, but has much more gravitas than this rubbish. Ill give it another go on Wednesday when I can see it again, otherwise its back to News at Noon and the One.
btw, did the news channel carry the full 13min 'London today'?

Yes I flicked over to the news channel and they did have London Today on there.
Are most regions using more senior presenters than usual for the new lunchtime news? Wales, West and Granada did, no idea who the lady was on London Today.

I like the way the Lunchtime News has been done. I sort of agree that there was too many adverts but it is a commercial channel. All the mistakes that happened -- you can't exactly blame Nick and Katie.After all, it was the first programme. Overall, it has changed for the better. I propose that there really the adverts should be spaced out. One for example at 12.55pm-1.01pm and 1.24pm-1.30pm. Adverts do tend to last that, I've noticed.
