I'm surprised nothing has been mentioned about the Scottish Independence Referendum coverage on ITV, assuming they will provide coverage...

Purely speculative, but that would be a great coup for STV to go on network and utilise their news and political resources and provide the Independence results to the UK...

Slightly off-topic I know, but I understand ITV has yet to make a decision on this.

The option of taking STV's programme is being considered but I think there are genuine concerns as to whether viewers in the rest of the UK would be prepared to watch an open-ended news programme with unfamiliar presenters and reporters, especially when they would be up against more recognisable faces on the BBC. If ITV does offer special programming on the night, I think it more likely that ITN will be asked to produce something under the ITV News brand – sharing resources and content with STV, but using its own presenters.

I know it's trivial, but on Sky Networks last post ^, the first quote is mine, not aconnell's. Like I say, trivial. Smile

Sorry about that. Not trivial at all. I've corrected it now ...

Would they be though? Bernard Ponsonby has been on network before, Debi Edward is the Scotland Correspondent for ITV, and Rachel McTavish is an ITN stalwart.

In fact most of the reporters at STV have appeared on Network at some point...

Never heard of the first, and though I know of Debi and Rachel they're not exactly familar names to ITV viewers. ITV though really need to do something and it's an ideal opportunity to test out Tom Bradby before the night itself.

Back to the topic itself and agree it's a shame that Alastair won't be on overnight but hopefully using him the following day means they're planning something a bit more comprehensive for daytime.

Quite a surprising decision from ITN, but I think it makes sense. The big event in terms of audience size will be the leaders debate, ITV got about 10 million views last time around. So it makes sense for Julie Etchingham to lead on this. Sky have used their Political Editor to lead the election night coverage before. Adam Boulton did this in 2010.

You would hope so, because for the past two elections the daytime coverage has only been an hour long and finished by 10.30, so if they're announcing an actual presenter for the daytime you'd have to assume it will be a bit longer this time. Unless they simply mean Stewart will present all the news bulletins that day.

Either way, the BBC will still dominate - so why not ?

The problem with the last election night was that they even lost to the alternative show on C4 and were barely ahead of the BBC News Channel simulcast of BBC One (1m V 1.2m). You can see why they want to shake things up.

How do you find out these show specific ratings? I can only find the weekly figures on BARB.
