Moving to Northern and Shell has worked to 5 News's advantage. They managed to get a journalist in the studio from OK! magazine at short notice to discuss the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy.

Managed?
Managed?

Imagine the heads rolling at Channel 4 News right now for not "managing" to book an airhead to plug a celebrity magazine while fawning over some rich posh people in a sycophancy-fest.

I'm sure Newsnight has Heat on redial right now.

Ignoring your clear snobbery, they did what was right for them by utilising the resources of N&S's magazine titles. In any case, Channel 4's republican target audience are foaming on Twitter for their coverage.

This is kinda relevant, does anyone know if the 5 news stage is cgi or real? Very Happy

And quite right too.
But my main point was about journalistic endeavour.
It was hardly a coup for Channel 5 News to "manage" to book someone who wants to publicise their own magazine.
If Channel 5 News had "managed" to get an interview with the Queen, kudos to them. If they had "managed" to get a new line or an exclusive angle, kudos to them.
But to imagine that, somehow, it was something praiseworthy or even noteworthy for Channel 5 News to "manage" to get a self-promoting journalist to comment on a news event is bizarre.
If anything, it echoes to the sound of barrels being scraped.

I think you're missing the point totally. The point that's being made is it's handy that when this story broke 5 News were able to quickly call upon the services of a relevant pundit due to the operation now being housed within Northern and Shell. I suspect if a massive football story broke, they could similarly call upon on a sports reporter from one of Desmond's newspaper titles.

Thank you Jon. That was all I was trying to say. On the 6.30, they managed to get the Sunday Express Royal Editor on, once again at very short notice as on Twitter she mentioned that she had to leave the building. A much easier pooling of resources considering in the past, Express and OK! journalists would have to travel out to Osterley or Grays Inn Road to provide expert punditry.

Has Emma Crosby left 5 news? she's not presented it for at least 2 weeks, last week it was their Chief correspondent Tessa Chapman and all this week it's been Polly the updates presenter.
And correct me if I'm wrong but 5 news doesn't have a large presenting team and uses a lot of freelancers?

I think Emma is on holiday as her twitter has not been used since before christmas. Polly seems to be the new next person to present followed by Simon Pusey or Julian Druker.

Even though Polly has been presenting 5 news for a while now I thought they would have went with someone more 'high profile'

Simon Vigar and Tessa Chapman covered the 5 and 6.30 bulletins last week for Emma.

This week has seen freelancer Natalie Verney cover at least two of Polly's shifts while's she's covered the main bulletins.

Emma is used to rolling news, great for the 6:30 programme tonight, catching the second half they had a guest in the studio, live pictures and simon vigar live in rome.
I think they are desperate to show the new pope but has missed out on the announcement. Polly will announce it at the 7:58 update.

Tonight's '5 News at 6.30' is billed as 'Boston Bombings: 5 News Special', although, the image being used on screen shows 'A Five News Special'.

*

Channel 5 hasn't been 'Five' for over two years now, surely they should have displayed it as ' 5 News'?

I've also noticed much more of a push on the website recently. Various plugs on the programmes and there is actually content at www.channel5.com/news, including articles, blogs and videos.
