So you think Emma Crosby would go to 5 News on a 1 year contract?
Why would you assume anything more - one year contracts are pretty standard and Emma Crosby is hardly a big named broadcaster - she's no Kirsty Young.
She's presented GMTV for 3 years, made headlines fronting BBC Nationals when a strike was on and spent years a Sky News. I think she is to be fair to her.
18 months on GMTV I think you'll find (generally just twice a week) - and what - four national BBC One bulletins at most, and now she presents the least watched bulletin on the least watched terrestrial channel.
Anyhow - putting all this to one side hopefully ITN rather than the Daily Star are allowed to make the call in this instance as to who should present.

Unlikely - ITN is merely the provider; Channel 5 is the client so it's up to them who presents their news programmes.
When we're discussing the "upmarket theme" are we referring to that utter mess of strings that went nowhere and screeched at the end? Absolutely hated that.
The original Channel 5 theme is a magnificent bit of music, the longer mix for the main bulletin is one of my favourite all time news themes.

I agree, Pete. Never liked the screechy strings version. The original theme was fantastic - like everything related to that first look, it was completely radical. There'd never been a news theme like it before. ITN has to be given credit for that first incarnation of Five News. Everyone always says how it was the BBC, Lambie-Nairn and David Lowe that modernised news presentation in 1999, but I'd strongly disagree with that. I'd say it was ITN and Channel 5 in 1997 - contemporary theme music, clean graphics, relaxed standing-up/perching on desk presentation etc. All of which was copied by the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the 2000s.
I liked the screechy strings. Compared with the previous look where the old music sat awkwardly with the more formal bulletin they'd moved towards, it was a lot more coherent.
Just spent 20 minutes looking over all the various on screen looks on TV Ark, and all of Sky's efforts seem really bland by comparison to ITN's distinctive bulletins. If they move back to being a proper news bulletin, not some cosy up showbiz fest, they'll regain this viewer.
I have a great deal of confidence in ITN to deliver.

Maybe but it's now Desmond's baby instead of RTL's and ITN do have to provide the editorial style Channel 5 wants and right now that's a showbiz fest seeing as their target audience is a Daily Star reader so yeah, expect them to deliver just that and nothing more. As said before like most of my post, the channel has essentially reversed itself into the position it was in before the 2002 rebrand, tacky and downmarket so unless it gets sold again, more of the same will be the result whoever is providing the news service.
... but the news service at launch was probably the best they've had!

More of the same as it currently stands of course, been a while since they've done non-sensationalist or showbiz fluff pieces. The representation I give is for the channel as a whole, not merely the news though that in itself is a good overview of the channel's principles.
About the 5 News theme. Yes, the original theme was brilliant and very different to what we had before, and it certainly made the other news organisations stand up and pay attention, even if in the end it wasn't as popular as they were hoping for. I think personally the best graphics from that era were the 2000 set, with the seamless transition from headline to opening titles, and the small but cosy white set with the big clock in the background. However, when they were trying to go upmarket it didn't suit the bulletins anymore and the new theme was definitely a step in the right direction. It's still my favourite 5 News theme.
I have to say though, that they never should have gone with the 'Five' name - it was inconsistent, with many newspapers referring to it as 'Channel Five', most people still saying Channel 5 anyway, and in the end it didn't really make much difference, apart from the "Channel 5 is a name, Five is a brand" thing.
Plus the idents at the start were a bit boring, wasn't there a shot of some escalators on one of them? Another one was someone spraying weedkiller, people playing games, someone playing golf. And these lasted two whole years. I think just as bizarre were the following set, set in a funfair - what was that about? Was there some programming theme on at the time? They only lasted a few months anyway.
I'd much prefer that era of Five over what we're seeing now, though.
My favourite of all of the 5News looks is definitely 2008-2011. In my opinion it was modern, stylish and the music was current yet 'newsy'. I hope that this news means a new look for 5News, I know that it only changed its image earlier this year, but I think that it just looks a bit dreary and dull in comparison to its predecessor.
