ITN workers vote for double strike

Journalists and broadcasting workers at ITN are to stage two strikes in a row over pensions. Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Bectu will walk out for 24 hours on January 16, hitting news programmes on ITV and Channel 4. A second strike will be staged on January 23, although unions held back from saying how long that will last.

The dispute centres on planned changes to ITN's pension scheme, including increasing retirement age from 60 to 65. Gerry Morrissey, assistant general secretary of Bectu, said the industrial action will seriously affect news output.

In view of the plethora of rolling news channels available to the 60% of the population with access to digital TV this sort of action won't have an overwhelming effect on anyone.

I have sympathy for those involved, but this isn't really a way to force ITN Management back to the table. It's more likely that ITV plc and C4 will look for an alternative news supplier as a long-term solution when their respective ITN contracts are up for renewal/renegotiation.

well C4 might, but isn't ITN the ITC nominated supplier so OFCOM would have to appoint a replacement

I think that's a little drastic. First of all, we'll have to wait and see whether the services to ITN and C4 will be affected in any way.

Darn! I wanted to see a ITN strike to see who would present the news bulletins!
