ITN staff set for major new year strike
3:55pm: ITN is facing major strikes in the new year after unions Bectu and the NUJ this afternoon unanimously voted to ballot for industrial action. The news organisation has refused to negotiate over a raft of changes it plans to make to its pension scheme from 1 January.

Stupidly they are planning to strike on December 30th or 31st, so there probably wouldn't be any full bulletins anyhow!

Perhaps the logic is that there are less people working those days so fewer people need to strike?

That would appear to lessen the impact of a strike - the opposite of what the unions would want, surely?

Maybe they want to strike on a day that would have less impact to start off with, and then strike on a busier day in the future?

And there are still bulletins during Christmas and New Year so it would still cause some disruption.

Not really, they can still oblitirate a whole days programming but will be taking less people out of work.

Also, the audiences for those bulletins would be huge. Whether the public notice depends on which presenter agrees to go on air. If it's a regular, they won't notice at all.

I think there's a bit more to the successful transmission of a television programme than just the presenter!

am i right in saying when the nominated news provider (ITN) can not provide the news it is down to the BBC to provide the news.

Don't know about that - but shurly now incase of news provider difficulties ITV could ask the new 17.7% shareholder to help out.. Shocked
