Yeah, that was a great tune. Like 623058 says it was originally composed for the lunchtime news bulletin in 1987 and lasted for just 2 years, but remarkably it lived on as the theme for news summaries until well into 1995! It sounded great on the overnight summaries; it almost has a sinister quality! Especially when followed by Phil Roman, who famously never smiled!
Actually on the topic of that theme, can anyone remember when the weekday morning news summary was introduced? I mean the one during late morning, as opposed to the overnight news. Was it when This Morning launched in 1988, or even before then?
I remember doing some research using newspaper archives and managed to find that the weekday afternoon summary was introduced in summer 1990 (I think). But I've seen ITN afternoon headlines during the 80s but seemingly read by the CA rather than from ITN itself. I don't think that happened until 1990, but willing to be proved wrong.
This 545 theme is also a favourite of mine (although, to be honest I think all the ITN tunes were classic during the 80s and 90s):
I love the way it builds up after the voiceover. Also a great theme follows it in that particular clip, the Six O'Clock News. They don't make theme tunes like these anymore.

I do believe the mid morning news come around September 1987 when new ITV daytime appear. around 10.30 ish?
Weekday afternoon summary? you mean the one at 15.25? That was around at least 1985. Which used these at titles.

File 12153 at the MHP Private Parts would seem to suggest that there were afternoon news summaries in 1985.

That's the one, Saying that I don't think Newspapers published it!
http://youtu.be/zHXKnWUXk5A?t=17s - this is one heck of a news theme! That takes me right back to my childhood on Saturday and Sunday evenings!
That one had a very strange afterlife on Euronews of all places, where they used it for years as their closedown theme (over a montage of all their previous logos). Think it was eventually replaced when the current look came in. (Euronews don't close down any more, but I believe they still occasionally play the montage). ITN was involved in the management of Euronews at the time.
Personally, at the time the 1999 rebrand came in I strained to hear the difference between the music then and the 1995 arrangement, they are very close (although used differently) compared to the completely different 2004 arrangement. Of course in the 1999 arrangement the headline bed came before the fanfare and the opening bit (which IIRC was slightly different for each bulletin in 1995) was omitted entirely.

IT may not surprise anyone BUT that piece of music is library

When the 1999 look first came in, they actually continued to do it as previous, with the opening theme and announcement first, and then Trevor or whoever else would say "Good evening. Tonight's headlines...". (Skip to 20 seconds)
I don't know when they changed it to having the headlines first, but it must have been pretty soon after because I don't remember it any other way than the headlines coming first.
TV Ark has the first bulletin broadcast under the new 1999 look, which also features the 'Evening News' text swooping out into the top left instead of just transitioning into the studio shot.
