Graphics wise at least I don't think News at Ten revamped the day ITN changed their logo as I've definitely seen one set of titles around with two differing frontcaps.

Didn't ITN use the 'Early Evening News' title back in the days of the '545' when there was a temporary schedule change?

I'm sure I remember the likes of Leonard Parkin in the CSO set they used at that point, with that background behind him!

(Anyone remember the studio overlay of Parkin or AN Other failing, leaving the voiceover over the '545' background?)

I seem to remember it being called the ITN News At 5.40 for a while and it was presented by Fiona Armstrong or the late Carol Barnes who shared the presenting duties (1 presenter in those days). THen it was relaunched in the early to mid 1990s and presented by John Suchet who until then had presented the Lunchtime News which used to be called the News at 12.30.

Thanks for starting this thread itsrobert. Nice to read through such a detailed and interesting discussion about presentation!

News at Ten revamped in November 1992. I'm not sure when the blue and gold ITN logo changed, but I would assume it was around this time - I've never seen the 1987 to 1992 titles with the newer logo.

That said, you're right in saying that the 1992 - 1999 sequence had differing frontcaps. I think the 1992 NAT title sequence was one of the most chopped and changed sequences they've ever had. They had the ITN frontcap but later replaced it with the logo animating on top of the Big Ben aerial shot, then with yet another change of ITN logo around 1994 they had it static on the shot. They had various shots of the ITN building from above, in the newsroom and from the atrium. They dropped the post-headlines sting... very hectic and inconsistent! I don't think this calmed down until ITN's old logo was reintroduced around late 1994 (or was it early 1995?). That title sequence seemed to stick - unchanged - until 1999.

No worries, BBCNicky - I'm enjoying the discussion too Smile

Come to think of it - you're right - they did chop and change the 1992-1999 NAT titles. Even the music was altered quite early on - the first version must have only lasted a few weeks before being replaced by the more powerful arrangement. There's a clip on TV Ark of the first version being used on Friday 4 December 1992 but a YouTube video I saw a while back showed the newer version being used in January 1993. Of all the variations, I think my favourite was when they had the post-headlines sting and the "From the headquarters of ITN..." voiceover. The new voiceover "From ITN..." along with dropping the end sting didn't have quite as much authority.

Sue Carpenter and Nicholas Owen were also frequent presenters of the News At 5.40.

Indeed, see here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxBGKTZ43vk - approximately, heh, 5:45 in. Also watch out for the rotating Christmas pudding in the football results.

I think Trevor McDonald also had a spell presenting the 5:40. There's footage of him doing so on TV Ark.

Thanks for that, Steve. I thought I'd searched the web fairly thoroughly for such things, but I'd missed that one. An interesting clip. I take it at that time Bank Holiday bulletins retained their individual looks rather than masquerading as the Weekend News. Out of interest, can anyone remember when Bank Holiday ITN bulletins adopted the weekend look?

Not sure exactly when ITN adopted the weekend look for Bank Holiday bulletins, but I remember the blue digital backdrop being used on bank holiday bulletins in the late 1980s, so it must have happened by then.

Goodness! A very young looking 'sports correspondent' Jeremy Thompson.

I recall the ITN 5:45 or 5:40 being handled by: Leonard Parkin / Carol Barnes / Anne Leuchers / Trevor / John Suchet / Fiona Armstrong / Pamela Armstrong (short spell) / Michael Nicholson / Martyn Lewis.

Pre-atrium, I liked the synthetic closing music, and occassionally we would be treated to a full rendition of it, with a close-cropped angled shot of the semi-circular desk, and the lights going down.

In the pre-pre atrium era (as in the Martyn Lewis clip above), the era was dominated (for me) by Michael Nicholson and his famous gaffes! I always assumed that the bulletin was broadcast from the same studio as News at Ten, with just different camera shots making the difference. Can anyone confirm if it was the same or a different studio?

Nope. News At One and News At Ten came from Studio 1 at Rediffusion House in that era, whilst the News at 5.45 came from Studio 2. Studio 2 was also used for Police 5 with Shaw Taylor.
