Apparently, "staycation" originates from North America (either the US or Canada, according to the all-knowing Wikipedia), hence the use of "vacation" rather than "holiday" in the portmanteau.
Whilst "staycation" doesn't damage the English language in that way (the word has its use)-- but I do think it is a contrived portmanteau. Perhaps "a home-holiday" would be a better phrase?

Well, they certainly don't seem to teach spelling, judging by that little lot.
So what exactly is a hypostroph, then? Sounds like something an irritable phrase might fly into.

Not to pull this topic off track any further... but instead of an irritating phrase I find an aspect of the BBC News Channel irritating.
At the end of headlines when they announce the website, you get that whole "live streaming" thing and then an image of the news channel on the website. Then, wait a second or two and we get a video within the video in the website. And so on and so forth as it repeats. For those who I have completely lost (many, I suspect) it's that thing that looks like standing between two mirrors.
Anyways, the only reason it irritates me is that no one waits long enough to make it look like a vortex..... I quite like it, infact, I think they keep putting it on in the hope one day Nicholas Owen forgets to announce the site and it just floats there like a... < insert appropriate metaphor >.
Ahem, that was a confession that took a long time to muster.
And, I don't really mind the term 'staycation'.

Mixed bag, as in "heterogeneous collection" was first used in print in 1936.
Pitty you did not keep the terrorist in the prison where he belonged.
You lot up there are only good at releasing convicted terrorists, its official, theres no life sentence for any conviction in Scottland.
Some countries have been attacked for doing less. the USA should do to Scottland what they did to Lybia following the aeroplane bombing. Your country has shown nothing but contempt for the victims and their family's, with your actions. I hope your really enjoy your country's newly found relatioship with Lybia.
Although I'm deeply flattered at the notion of having power to send troops hither and thither, and the ability to release convicted criminals at will - I have to inform you, I am merely a citizen of Scotland, not its Ruler.
Those matters which upset you so much are no more my responsibility than the release of Ronnie Biggs is yours.
But I do share one aspect with Scotland's Justice Minister - that of compassion.
You surely have mine.

Doesn't the term 'Mixed Bag' come from the old sweet shops, where you would buy a bag with a mixture of sweets, and some would be nice and others the ones you don't like...
