To be brutal - you are not missing much on Irish television, especially with the Virgin Media channels who simply air the bulk of ITV from Emmerdale, Corrie, Saturday Night Takeaway, This Morning, Dancing on Ice - the list goes on
From what I can remember Irish tv seems old fashioned with a very safe approach RTE had big sports desk on outside broadcast which is what BBC Sport did back in the mid 90s.
attempt to get irish tv for my mum and dad who live in the uk is this possible, if so how
If your willing to pay a couple of pound a month for it, TVMucho is great. You can get all the irish channels and UK channels for about £7 a month (i think).

Old fashioned is the key words for RTE, which is probably why they are tanking in their finances at the moment - they have been forced to sell acres of land at their complex, and it looks like their own fantastic radio centre will be sold off, with RTE moving their radio stations to a smaller part of the complex in a few years time.

This works well if nothing else does. Large Parts of Irish TV aren't great, but RTE 1 and TG4 are worth the effort. RTE News and Documentaries are as good as any in the UK, Plus the sports coverage is pretty good and for years was considered by many working in the UK broadcast industry as good as the UK product (even with a shoestring budget) Their Football coverage and panelists were miles ahead of UK ones, with real opinions offered.
Virgin Media Television is terrible however, and outside of some sports analysis and Champions league Football has little to offer.

To answer the OP, RTÉ and TG4 are available in Northern Ireland only (Sky, VM, and Freeview mini mux) but not GB.
Since the demise of Tara TV, RTÉ have talked from time to time about an international channel but aren’t currently presuing that. There is a cut down version of the RTÉ Player available internationally that contains the programmes RTÉ hold worldwide rights to.
