"We interupt this programme to bring you a News Report.

Fairly strange question!!! (April 2005)

Can anyone tell me the last time a scheduled programme was interupted on the BBC - I've recently seen a News Report from 1992 (I think) when the war in the Gulf broke out, have there been any more recent interuptions?

The last time a programme was actually interrupted for a News Report, rather than waiting for it to finish, was the Queen Mother's death in 2002 I think. They broke into Auntie's Bloomers IIRC.

The day of the wicked Omagh bombing, on 15 August 1998, programmes were actually interrupted by flashes asking for medical staff from hospitals to go to the Tyrone County Hospital in the town, such was the expected scale of the casualties from the atrocity.

I don't remember, for I was in the car and came home to put on BBC News 24, but I would imagine that programmes were interrupted on 11 September 2001.

And for news of Princess Diana's car accident that lead to her death in August 1997?

I'd have thought they would have last night to be honest but when I looked only BBC ONE was broadcasting any news programme. I suppose by waiting for the programme to end it gives them more time to get more information as opposed to simply interrupting the programme with one line of information.

BBC1 didn't break into programmes on September 11th 2001. Immediately after Neighbours finished, they showed the News Report slide (during the balloon years, of course) and cut into BBC News 24 with John Nicolson and Valerie Sanderson.

As for Diana, I'm not 100% sure, but I have a feeling they had a News Report with Martyn Lewis and eventually ended up joining BBC World with Nik Gowing overnight. Bearing in mind, of course, that BBC News 24 did not exist then.

There's a clip on the MHP Private Parts featuring the end of Neighbours going straight into the News Report from 9/11. Speaking of which, I bought a "cracking" DVD yesterday featuring 3 documentarys about 9/11 featuring 24 Hours from Ground Zero, 7 Days in September and A Year at Ground Zero. All very good from the people concerned.

I think your right about Diana, I think BBC1 broke away a couple of times or at least flashed up a message about Diana and then went straight to BBC World for a couple of nights and also if I remember correctly, the night before Diana's funeral. They replaced the globe with a picture of Diana with datemarks from birth to death with the national anthem in the background for closedown.

Coverage about the breakout of news across the night and day about Diana can be found
here

The evening before Diana's funeral was the announcement of Mother Theresa's death which I think was announced at 7.30 pm that night. I've got a clip of that which I encoded from a few years ago of that annoucement. Sadly, a woman who did a lot more for the world than Diana and yet the coverage about this was largely swept under the newsroom floor and indeed the rest of the media due to the scale of the Diana coverage [

When the Queen Mother died both the BBC and ITV1 broke into scheduled programmes.

On September 11th, ITV1's broadcast with Kirsty Young started immediately after Part 1 of an episode of Crossroads

Indeed, the ITV equivilent of a network recall. With ITV having less of a networked structure and presumably no ability to force regions to join ITN, I'm surprised there wasn't one region that didn't and carried on as normal
