KHOU swapped to what they called an 'NBC satellite' last night. Most likely permanently leased space elsewhere, so will be a cheaper.

If you want to know the specific satellites check out this thread over at Ricks Satellite Wildfeed and Backhaul Forum. The one thing is the satellite that's most recently listed is a HughesNet transponder (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page) that's set up for Internet/interactive feeds. On the Galaxy 16 satellite there are a ton of transponders devoted to feeds for ABC, CBS and Fox.

That may explain why the YouTube live stream is now 720p.

NBCs 1080i as is CBS. If WFAA is doing any part (supposedly uplinking the CBS feed) chances are their plant is setup to be 720p - the ABC format.

Edit : According to this post over at TVNewsTalk they said it looks like that WFAA is producing it and uplinking the feed to the transmitter. If that's the case that's probably the reason why it's 720p.

Remarkably KHOU appears to be moving back into their old station after renovating it.

The flood waters reached five feet high on the first floor and completely destroyed the control room, studio, and newsroom.

Frankly, they're idiots. What if it happens again?

Well KHOU is using bits and pieces from their previous set to create a better on-air look at the PBS station they are campped out in at the moment.

I agree. But unfortunately that's something they and the insurance company had to think about. They were in the middle of a renovation when the storm hit. So it's all about the money - spend a few million to salvage (the equipment room was upstairs), repair and replace everything or spend upwards of $20 million or more to build a new station (even if it's a preexistint building*).

TEGNA is cheap - I believe one of their smaller market stations "studio" may be a chroma key wall running off a Tricaster. They even had a reporter in the field by herself during the hurricane at one of their stations.

Hopefully next time they'll buy better flood control solution. I've seen this thing called Water-Gate that seems to truly work.

Someone over in the TVNT thread I linked to mentioned that some of the prime real estate (outside the flood zone) in Houston may have had their prices go up.

* One example is NBC's KNSD in San Diego. They bought a relatively new large building (52,000 square feet) for $9.4 million ( CA real estate is expensive) but the total cost of the "new" studios were $35 million. They had to gut it all and replace it.

KHOU is still making it work in the worst possible conditions. Admirable by any stretch.
I love the hand made #KHOUSTRONG hanging in the background. Absolutely brilliant.

Peculiar. A few years ago, Gulli, a French TV channel airing children's programming, used to broadcast its own "weather report". I'm putting "weather report" between quotation marks because it also contained a bit of trivia and facts about food and stuff.

The weather part of that short programme featured both weather forecast and clothing advice. It heavily relied on pre-recorded elements (just like the announcements in French railway stations). However, the lack of variety in pre-recorded elements made it sound very unnatural.

And, to top it all, the "anchor" was a CGI monkey named "Toubo". Here's Gulli's weather forecast from 5 February 2010.

It's like they are working at the Olympics.

Because of the threat posed by Hurricane Irma Telemundo has evacuated and closed their headquarters prior to landfall. Apparently a skeleton crew is in DC to keep them on air. I imagine their key anchors and reporters will remain on the ground throughout the storm.

Here's an image of the Telemundo HQ boarded up ahead of the storm.

Telemundo's Miami, WSCV, which is colocated with the NBC affiliate, WTVJ, is staying out and both stations have been on air yesterday and all night. They come from Hurricane proof building which I believe is outside of the evacuation zone.
