Meridian does cover South Essex.

I'm not entirely sure who told you that Meridian covers South Essex but it doesn't. Maybe they include south Essex stories in their bulletins but the programme is not intended for the region. Anglia/ITVLondon are both the service providers for south Essex. Anglia has an office in Chelmsford. Naturally you will be able to pick up Meridian in Southend as it's not far from Kent but you SHOULD NOT officially get Meridian in Essex.

Many people in Essex have aerials on Bluebell Hiil (a Meridian transmitter) and therefore Meridian choose to serve them. I've seen aerials as far north as Colchester on Bluebell. Not surprising if you look at the coverage map.

I should imagine stories from Anglia's office in Essex would be shared with Meridian, in the same way Calendar shares Lincolnshire stories with CNE?

Well I guess you learn something new every day! I live in Southend and am not aware of anyone getting Meridian. I always assumed that people around the Thurrock area would probably pick it up as it is practically Kent. However, the coastal towns picking it up does surprise me. I might do a Rod Hull and go up and adjust my aerial! Embarassed

Part of the problem is Sudbury's (Anglia/BBC East) poor coverage on the south Essex coast.

All my relatives in Southend can get Meridian, Anglia and London (but they all favour London over the others). In fact one of my relatives can only get Meridian for the simply for the reason the aerial points to Bluebell Hill (I think the guy who installed it couldn't point it to Crystal Palace due to the huge block of flats getting in the way).

In any case, if they formally change the region names, I expect there is more than one lawyer over at Freemantle Media waiting to see how the copyrighted word "Thames" fits into things.

Shocked

Whatever the exact name of Thames Television is/was (e.g. "Thames Television Ltd" or whatever) is the only thing that Fremantle would have any copyright ownership of, not just the word "Thames" alone! Rolling Eyes

It's the name a real-life river! Therefore a company can't very well "own" the word/name! Rolling Eyes

I don't have to seek Fremantle's permission in order to say "I went to London the other day, and had a boat ride on the River xxxxxx", do I?

So, as the new ITV news region has got the word "Valley" - not "Television" - straight after the word "Thames", there can't very well be a problem! Rolling Eyes

It'll cover the word "Thames" in relation to broadcasting

'Thames Radio' the SW London FM radio station had no problems (before it went bust and was replaced by Radio Jackie). Although I seem to recall Thames Radio did have ex Thames TV directors on the board.

Oh yes, and the BBC used the name "Thames Valley FM" when BBC Radios Berks and Oxford were merged from 1996 until 2000 ish.

I'm surprised that the ITV Thames Valley service are going for the "Today/Tonight" formula. I had really expected it to be "News/Tonight", in-keeping with Meridian.

BBC Oxford must be gutted! Surely they would've wanted "Thames Valley Today" for when the South Today sub-opt finally goes full-time? I wonder what name they'll think of now?

Exactly the reason why they'd probably not want to use the Thames Valley name for an expanded TV programme from Oxford!

Going back to Meridian covering South Essex, I remember a story that London Today used which was about police searches at Grays railway station, a Meridian SE reporter was used.
