That's an interesting point that I hadn't considered.

I understand there are already people within the industry jokingly referring to the six o'clock programme as "ITV Thames - The Valley Tonight".

Well I don't wish to offend but I have seen a number of people posting praise about Wes Smith.

I have seen a few snippets from you know where and I can't say that I was particularly impressed. I have been racking my brain, trying to think who he sounds like and now it has come to me. He sounds exactly like Nicholas Parsons!!

He seems to read the news in Nicholas Parsons Sale of the Century styley - very surreal.

Maybe as part of the opening titles, they could introduce:

' And now, from Whiteley (sp)
It's the news of the day'

and get even more similarity to the Sale of the Century - especially bearing mind you can win a mini!

Strange that the late news is 'Thames Valley Today' instead of 'Tonight'.

London, West and Wales all use 'Tonight' for the late bulletin. Meridian just use 'News'

I wonder what they will do at weekends? Meridian use 'News' at weekends. London has 'Tonight', and West only uses 'Tonight' if the programme starts after 5pm, otherwise its 'Today'.

Well here in Anglia-land the weekday 6pm programme is Anglia Tonight, but Anglia News at any other time (including weekend evenings).

And in the north east... North East News - daytime (including GMTV), North East Tonight - main evening programme (including weekends) and back to NEN for late weekday bulletins.

I was round at my In Laws earlier, ( they are ITV-1's perfect demographic match Very Happy ). They live smack in the middle of the old Meridian West (North really) area, and were regular viewers of Meridian News.

Unprompted I asked, "How's the new local news show ?"

Paraphrasing their reply was:-

"First that nice Andy Craig goes, now there's some new bloke, who we don't like much, presenting the news, with lots of stories about Oxford. What's going on, we don't like it, and we've gone back to Fred Dineage on the other Meridian we can get" (I set up Meridian South a while ago on their Sky box's 'Other Channels' menu.)

Not apparently on his own Christmas cards, though. I expect he's dropped you from the list this year after that faux pas.

Another sad observation this morning on the GMTV pan regional bulletin.

"Traffic flow is currently good in the Meridian and Thames Valley regions"

I wait with eager excitement for tonight's Meridian Soccernight, to see if Nick's prediction is correct and it ends up on Central South too.

Meridian does cover South Essex.

I'm not entirely sure who told you that Meridian covers South Essex but it doesn't. Maybe they include south Essex stories in their bulletins but the programme is not intended for the region. Anglia/ITVLondon are both the service providers for south Essex. Anglia has an office in Chelmsford. Naturally you will be able to pick up Meridian in Southend as it's not far from Kent but you SHOULD NOT officially get Meridian in Essex.

Parts of South Essex definitely fall within the Meridian region.

From ITV's own description of Meridian:
ITV posted:
ITV Meridian is the newest company in the group having been on the air since the start of 1993. Its transmission area covers the South and South-East of England - an area that extends from Weymouth in the West to Dover in the East, taking in south Essex and a major part of the Thames Valley

Many people in Essex have aerials on Bluebell Hiil (a Meridian transmitter) and therefore Meridian choose to serve them. I've seen aerials as far north as Colchester on Bluebell. Not surprising if you look at the coverage map.
