I just remembered that TV Ark has a brief clip of CNN from that day 20 years ago, including John Zarrella on the scene after the hurricane had passed (her was thrown around by the wind earlier that morning):

John Zarella reporting live just a few moments ago on CNN. Almost exactly 20 years ago, I watched him report from the rain and the wind as Hurricane Andrew struck Florida. He's one of the few CNN correspondents from that era to remain with the network.

It can't possibly be, unless your TV is doing some sort of zooming, in which case you'd lose the CNN Int flipper at the bottom of the screen. I'm watching CNN right now (they're simulcasting with US at the moment) and it's being displayed as 16:9 in an overall 4:3 frame. CNN Int does not broadcast in 16:9, it's always been in 4:3. When it shows US, it shows the full 16:9 picture that Americans are seeing, but it remains within the Int 4:3 frame, meaning you get black bands.

CNN Domestic is showing in 16:9 on my tv, via sky. Always has done.

Yeah mines has letter boxed now, but on all sides. But I'm on the wrong computer to screen capture from my TV.

Do you have a widescreen TV and do you normally have black bands left and right when it's not simulcasting with US? If so, then you have your TV set up correctly - CNN Int only ever broadcasts in 4:3 so the correct way to view it on a widescreen set is with black bands down both sides. The alternative is to force your TV to fill the screen, but that ends up stretching the square 4:3 picture into a rectangular shape and results in people looking fatter than they are.

Yeah left and right when it's on CNNi, but when its on CNN US, it just doesn't like it all. Only noticed it when I was watching The Situation Room the other night.
Yeah I've tried the stretching and fattening up method, didn't make it any better!

Not really, the only international news channel that broadcasts in 16:9 FHA is BBC World - CNNi, Al Jazeera, Russia Today,
CCTV, France 24 etc are all in 4:3.
4:3 is still a pretty universal format and it's difficult to mess up through the broadcast chain. When you're dealing with hundreds of cable companies around the world (India has several hundred alone apparently) it can be best to keep it simple
Have CNN International got any plans to broadcast in 16:9? They're so behind the times.

Been watching Fox News's coverage the last couple of days.
They seem to be suggesting it will hit New York sometime after sunrise tomorrow morning their time. Could be very interesting to see how it is handled when it does hit New York - will the stations like Fox News go off air or are they going to try and continue through it?

Ahh, thanks, still 2 isn't many. 3 if you include Euronews, but that's not really international like the others.
