With Gustav bearing down on New Orleans, the media are piling into the city as everyone else evacuates. The local stations in New Orleans have been broadcasting round-the-clock coverage all weekend.

A few links...

WWL (CBS)
WDSU (NBC)
WGNO (ABC)
WVUE (FOX)

Excellent coverage from all of these - and as they're local channels, their focus is on telling people what they need to know, rather than sensationalising the story.

I've been watching these all weekend, so haven't seen how any of the 24-hour news channels (in the UK or US) are covering Gustav.

Interesting stuff, I remember watching a lot of these during Katrina.

I've had WWL playing in the background for a couple of days now. I find it quite fascinating, being able to watch a local American channel live online. Anyway, they are definitely being less sensationalist than the news channels in the UK. The BBC are still playing the mayor's 'call to action' speech every hour, even though the situation has changed a lot since the speech was made over 24 hours ago.

CNN International is currently showing CNN U.S., Anderson Cooper is on air from New Orleans itself and theres a few other correspondents in various locations. A little earlier Anderson was taken off air and they had to go to the Atlanta studio, where the weather presenter said the hurricane was beginning to hit New Orleans.

Anderson seems really good in this sort of situation, pretty good coverage from CNN.

Hey,

Does anyone have pics of local US stations in New Orleans? Or does anyone know where to get some pics or videos?

I've been listening to WLMG and WKBU FM, who have had a joint programme across the Entercom Network (including one of the ESPN stations) - it's been very similar to Capital Radio's network coverage of the London bombings, although it has been a bit more light hearted and they've taken callers on air.

One thing they seem to have failed to do however is disable a computer that seems to automatically slot in adverts on each of the stations, so it cuts in half way through what someone is saying at different times on the different stations.

Just to add to my previous comment, if New Orleans is supposed to be evacuating, what about all these TV and radio presenters staying behind to keep stations on air?

Here on One News in NZ their US reporter said he would be in the eye of the storm when it hits... so I guess reporters can stay!?

There are 10,000 people left in New Orleans according to a story I saw before.

Wow, there pres is terrible.

Still, wonder why we don't have local new channels, such as ITV Calendar 1 or something? Guess its not as important, local news channels, in a small country.

CNN International are doing about the hurricane in quite some depths in their weather forecasts.... even though no-one watching CNN-I will actually be in the way of it!
