Regarding spotlight, I'm guessing you're referring to the music here. I also preferred this to the later music.
Regarding Spotlight and Westcountry Live, I think I preferred the earlier 'lighthouse' theme music but the later opening titles. Westcountry, I didn't like the Carlton era titles with the wavy lines, but I did like the earlier 1993 onwards theme. I thought the 'middle 8' was a bit over the top though.

I know I'm bumping this thread, but...
I don't think the BBC One O'Clock News theme of 1986 has been mentioned yet - which TV Cream says is *the* greatest news theme of all time.
Well, there's no denying that it's very good, and you certainly can sing along with the opening fanfare: "Here-is-the-news, from-the-B-B, Ceeee..."
However, the Birt-influenced re-arrangement of 1993 is absolutely awful. And I think there are too many other candidates for the greatest UK national news theme, let alone the greatest news theme of all...
