I notice the lighting on the National set seems to be somewhat lacking on this evening's 6 O'Clock news. Perhaps this has something to do with the move?

I like the concept of the set realising its own fate, and slowly dying. Smile

Next, the desk'll turn a horrible colour of yellow and the laminate flooring will start peeling... The end is neigh...

Like the colour the desk was when the set was first launched? Laughing

Yeah, full circle almost. You know I'll be so glad when this set is gone, it's been nothing but a bloody annoyance. From the off set it's looked awful, and very rarely does something immeditaely repulse me, but this has succeded on every level!

Bring on the change!

Yep i felt exactly the same way about that studio. So does anyone have any details about the new studio? And anyone know about new titles/ graphics?

I think if you really think about it you can see what they were trying to achive with this set. I found an image on the internet of something totally unrelated, but it kind of gives the impression of what it could have been like.

Clearly they were trying to give an impression of space with the mirrors at the back, and this almost sheet of glass along the back wall looking out on the newsroom. And really if they had had the space to do it properly it could have looked amazing. If the studio was twice the height it is they could have had this vast open space with the desk in the middle, and it would have looked great. The size of N6 does limit what can be put in there, and it makes you wonder exactly what they can come up with this time around that doesnt look like a shoebox. Saying that they previous set looked so much bigger, so maybe something good can be achieved.

Haha, yes it was rather a ludicrous statement. Something about the air in this forum conditions you to lend momentous importance to the simplest of observations.

Let the mass hysteria continue.

It is that above all that so surprised me about that monstrous 2003 set - the fact that it wasn't even attempted to conceal how small the space really is.

I find it extraordinary that the most famous and most respected broadcasting institution in the world has the most hideous National News set, and broadcast from a miniscule studio. Have a look round the internet at various national broadcasters in Europe and their online streaming services. Whatever about graphics etc (and bizarre broadcast times), look even at the size of some of the facilites compared to BBC Nationals. Even RTÉ News who appear to be operating out of the same facility since 1961 is roughly the same size as N6! I'd image it's quite embarrassing for you Embarassed

Yes, the current studio always reminded me of a TV Display corner in Dixons, for some reason. I think "naff" just about sums it up.

We could see a return of a real snazzy looking set, such as:

Jaime,

In keeping with your "nursery rhyme" theme, and to lighten the mood somewhat:

I agree that the current set in N6 is appalling. I appreciate that there is alot of space taken up by the back projection screens, but the previous one looked so much more spacious and still had 3 screens.

They made the old one look bigger with almost ceiling level shots at the end of the programme, but they can't do it with the current one because I think the mirrors would be shown up for what they are!!!!

From the beginning I always thought the current one looks as though they are doing the bulletin from a fancy bus shelter! Confused Confused Confused

Most of the ITV regional studios are tiny (certainly the one at Westcountry is), and yet they manage to make them look spacious enough, even with a back projection screen.

I wouldn't have used the word "snazzy", but they had a certain charm.

Do you know I once read the news on (one of) those sets back in 1986, and have the VHS to prove it.

Now that would be an interesting forum upload...

The worst thing thing about the current N6 set, is the dark wooden-looking flooring, the previous light wood colour - which most/all regions still have - was much better. Lighter colours expand the sense of space and darker colours enclose it, obv.

I hated it right from it's launch. It's immediate couple of predecessors were much better IMHO. Since they changed the CGI newsroom to a whiter one (also adding the red strip at the same time) it looks a bit better. The whiter newsroom gives more of a feeling of space, what with white being the palest "colour" possible, and all.

The only thing really stopping the current N6 set from looking quite as News-24-esque as it's trying to be is, again, the dark floor. It's nasty.

Although adding the red strip made the BBC1 nationals look a bit better, it looks so out-of place when N6 is re-used for the likes of HardTalk etc.

Given that News24 has a white floor and most/all regions have PALE wood colour, I can't understand whatever posessed them to put a dark floor in N6. Whichever studio is used for "The World" etc is the only other one with a dark wood floor. Why, BBC, why?
