As NickyS said earlier and AFAIK, the Nationals will not be getting its new set on May 2nd. That will happen later in the month...However some other changes and a new look for something else may happen on this date... Wink

I don't think I quite said that - you need to check carefully what I've said Wink

It's certainly due a new set, as they were recently asking for suggestions on what viewers would like to see.

Peter Barron has said that the programme will be getting a whole new look and set and had (and still is IIRC) inviting viewers comments and ideas

I had an eye on the studio outputs for TC7 and TC11 yesterday, and you'd be hard pressed to notice that anything was different.
The only major change is that the Breakfast set is now opposite the Nationals.

what are they using TC11 for?

Gosh. Isnt the "wooden floor" just paint ... so they would have to paint the wooden floor in TC7 where the nationals is.

No, it's lino.

Think you mean it WAS lino...

Well surely then its just "floor" now then, grey painted studio floor? Actual wood would be unnessassary, and it needs to be fairly smooth for the cameras/tripods... It's probally (I'd guess) N24 grey with the set floor being plastic/perspects?

So to clarify, was it lino in N6?

Interesting picture on Laduk below of the Newsnight set. Oh the wonders of lighting!

Why assume studio floors are always painted grey?

Historically, studio floors for studio drama and sitcom were always painted with floor tiles, wood floor boards etc., rather than using the real thing, so that cameras could track over them smoothly.

The only reason to paint them a uniform colour is if you have to house a number of different shows and sets within the same studio, where you'd then using lighting effects to change the look of the floor, or if you actually wanted a painted floor effect...

If you want a studio floor to look like wood, and you can paint it, then why not paint wood on it?

(Well the answer to that question is that paint effects are usually temporary and don't last that long. Fine for a short block of sit com, not great for 3 years of a fixed set...)

Anyone who has been into the studio you mention will have seen that the floor is indeed a wood-effect lino, as many BBC regions also use. If they'd been paying attention they'd have noticed the entire studio was covered, not just the in-vision bits, so that cameras didn't have to cope with a change in height.

As a number of people here have been on that tour I don't think that is a state secret.

Well yes - the Newsnight set is projectors and lightboxes... Switch the projectors and lightboxes off and you're left with a bunch of grey screens and perspex.

I take it the ITV sets are the same. Can you just change colour ad-hoc or is it rather complex?
