I realise that today will have been a hard day for all of those at Granada, but there does seem to be something amiss in allowing the death of a presenter to fill the entire main bulletin, especially considering the current corona situation in the region. Even if they had gotten one of the other regions to record a short bulletin with a round up of the other news to play at 18:00 with the tribute programme following at 18:05 or at 18:22 after the tribute, something really should have been done to cover the local developments in corona and other stories in the region.

What a heartless thing to say.

Wow, heart of stone or what?

I think they got it spot on tonight. Tony had been a main local presenter for 20 years and was well known and loved in the region. I don't know about elsewhere but the north west has a very strong community spirit and the local TV personalities play a large role in this. It's no overstatement to say that they are like family to a great number of people.

I'm afraid any coverage of other news would have been far too jarring on tonight's Granada Reports. North West Tonight had Tony as the top story but swiftly moved on to other news and Granada may cover other stories later this evening in its late bulletin. I see absolutely no harm in the main GR being a tribute programme tonight. It's what it's audience would have expected, I'm sure.

Viewers would have expected a tribute to the lead co-anchor. Regional news bulletins outside London and especially in the north of England have a close affinity between the viewers and presenters/reporters as part of the wider family outside the newsroom.

As mentioned, anything that affected the Granada Region and Covid-19 would be on the national news afterwards or you could have watched NWT on BBC One instead.

I have no issue with Granada using their airtime this evening to pay tribute to one of their own.

Think this is what Granada and NWT do best when someone in the team dies and it would have been wrong to just have small bit about Tony and then on to the rest of the news. Lucy and the team did an amazing job today and was a lovely tribute to the man.

Yes, I thought NWT got it spot on too - a fulsome tribute, mentioned at the end, a team clearly moved by the death, a warmth and affection evident for all their colleagues ‘across the water’.

Broadcasting and journalism is a small world - everyone knows everyone, and that extended family feel is what makes regional news so popular and in touch with their viewers.

Was the late bulletin used for just news this evening? I don’t think anyone would mind if it was used as a tribute. Rip Tony.

ITV is advertising for someone 'to work alongside Lucy'.

''We’re looking for a Main Presenter to work alongside Lucy Meacock on our 6pm news programme, Granada Reports and our lunchtime and late bulletins. As one half of our presenting partnership, you’ll not only be the main face of our news service on TV but you’ll come to us with a high profile on social media.''

"As a programme we recognise that the North West is culturally diverse and we are looking to be more inclusive and representative of our audience so we’re looking for a person who can make a really strong contribution to that agenda. You’ll have an appetite to engage with our viewers and build our digital audience"
