It's a convention that we hold Elections on Thursdays, but nothing more than a convention. Legally I believe they can be held on any day.

I believe the law is any working day.

Well, there is another problem with that date.

Tens of thousands of religiously observant Jews will be unable to go to a polling station to vote on 14 October if a general election is called for that day, critics have warned.

The date slated for a proposed election clashes with the first day of Succot, a Jewish religious festival.

Observant Jews cannot vote on this day because activities associated with work - including writing - are banned on major festivals.

I think we could potentially argue any date in the next 365 days is unsuitable for somebody somewhere if one did enough research.

25,212 people said they were Jewish in the 2011 census, will have changed in the years since and not all will observe the holiday but still a significant number of people.

Why not just do a postal vote then?

Elections are only on Thursdays by custom, not by law. If someone really wants to call one for a day that isn't a Thursday, then nothing's stopping them.

I can't imagine many will stay up on a Monday night to watch the coverage?

What audience figures have recent Thursday elections had?

Why would it be any less than on a Thursday? Friday is still a working day for the majority of people.

You can 'make it through' a Friday, if you've been up/out late on Thursday, so not the same as Monday.
In fact Thursday nights in my experience are often busier than Friday nights in bars and restaurants , if you're going to feel rough next day, feel rough on a work day !

As was Nina and guests on the ITV Lunchtime News. Probably helps cut out some of the noise of the protesters.

I note that Sky News still put up name tag for the Prime Minister. I thought the PM and a few Royals and US president don't get name tag /graphics as it's expected you'd know them anyway.

Somebody mentioned a while back that the policy has changed.

They probably don't think viewers will believe who the Prime Minister is without signposting it.
