The Queen is under no obligation to choose Brown as the next Prime Minister (even though there is almost no chance that she would pick somebody else) but the BBC are implying that Brown now has a contitutional right to become PM, which is misleading.

Not really, it's not as if 'Next Prime Minister' or 'Prime Minister Delegate' have any official status.

The constitution (not that we have a proper one) works on precedent, to which thre is none in this case - I don't think even Thatcher/Major had this sot of changeover period

But the point is the BBC are implying that GB will 100% certainly become PM, which is not necessarily the case.

I agree with James on this one.

I'll second that! I'd really have expected greater accuracy from the BBC. Confused

It is a bit presumptuous of them, especially considering the level of accuracy the BBC is known for,

In Australia the Prime Minister doesn't usually have an aston, neither does the Queen or Pope. The Governor-General (our representative for the Queen when she's not in the country) does quite a bit though. A lot of the time it depends on context.

But he is going to be the next PM (assuming that he doesn't pull out at this late stage) because there are no other candidates.

Not necessarily, the queen has the right to choose anyone to be the next PM, it just so happens that this is most likely to be the leader of the biggest parliamentary party.

I'm starting to think they'll aston Gordon Brown until the next election and then he will be assumed to be sufficiently well known if elected by the country...

Reversing the question now, how soon after TB steps down will he start being astoned again in mainstream news? I suppose it would be immediate as the caption would be providing information if it read along the lines of Tony Blair - Former Labour Leader?

It would be Tony Blair - Former PM as this is how John Major is done. But how long before he is astoned again? how long was it before John Major was astoned again?

Surely it's still: "Gordon Brown-- Chancellor of the Exchequer" ?!!

He only stops being COTE when Tony Blair leaves 10 Downing Street, and GB moves in (not until the end of June)!!

A News 24 presenter just called him "the Prime Minister elect".
No-one has elected him!

I'd be far happier if the caption read:-

"Gordon Brown - Leader of the Opposition".
