This forum is all about 'venting' one's feeling about Television presentation isn't it?
So, here we go. Did anyone have the misfortune this morning to watch the dreadful Fiona on GMTV with Ben - the future's so bright - Sheppard. (what a formidable combination THAT is!!)
They were covering the floods in Yorkshire with a reporter know as Mike in the GMTV helicopter with great aerial shots of the rising water when suddenly Fiona shouts all across Mike by saying - "Mike- Mike - stop their - we're going to cross LIVE to LA to see the release of Paris Hilton" The biggest story of the summer here in the UK gets the good 'ole GMTV sidetracking treatment. I mean, who really gives a flying F*c* about Paris Hilton - the so called report was in no way worthy of the air time!!
Indeed so bad was that piece of television that Terry Wogan even took the piss out of it a few minutes later on Radio 2.
I'm sorry, but GMTV lost the plot a long time ago.
Rant over - comments please!!

Ahem - this is about something specific!

(God, my hatred for generic threads is beginning to resurface!)

Anyone would think Paris Hilton's imprisonment was comparable to Nelson Mandela's the way the media have treated it. At most it's an "And Finally..." item - especially when major stories are developing at home.

Also, as the flooding thread seems to have been abruptly closed, can I just say last night how patronising and condesending presenters on both News 24 and Sky News seemed to be when talking to people on the phone.

I know it's not easy getting the right balance between getting the facts and not appearing rude, but the concern they tried to show was so obviously fake it was cringeworthy.

And of course mother nature can't take the blame for this - the news organisatoins are now switching to who is responsible for not informing people it might/could happen. Well, I'd say they have a pretty big responsibility to get the information across (if they weren't so busy counting down the hours till a drunk driver is released) - though to be fair it's hardly been absent from the weekends weather forecasts.

This is all hardly surprising -- the news stopped being a service and started being an entertainment show a while back.

Even less surprising is that the kings of tabloid tat, GMTV, should be at the forefront of this shift.

They may have covered it -- but break in to hard news to report it?

Has to be said though that ITV's morning show has a long history of shoddy news coverage -- remember TVAM's reporting of the Brighton bombing?

Every part of GMTV is dire.

Why do we watch it if its so dire - i ask myself that every morning. I do wish it had more news, but then im glad it doesnt because thats what BBC Breakfast offers, GMTV is more of a light entertainement show, which is ok for me in the morning.

You don't have to defend them. They're not whollely owned by ITV.

I'm not defending them I'm providing additional information, anyway I thought you were banned?

From what I can gather, quite a few channels did this this morning but because GMTV is partly owned by ITV, they get the blame the most Rolling Eyes But here comes my GMTV rant Laughing

Fiona, Ben and Andrew need to disappear from GMTV Today. Ben is alright on Entertainment Today but I can't take him seriously as a newsreader. Kate Garraway is the only woman holding GMTV Today together these days because she isn't patronising and she knows when to be serious and when not to be. John, Penny, Gloria and Amanda are all good on the Newshour and Andrea was good on GMTV Today. At least Andrea and Gloria should be on the flagship show instead of Fiona who is just the lowest of the low when it comes to journalism.

Any broadcaster's "news department" which breaks out of hard news to cover frivolous non-events like Paris Hilton's misdemeanours does is not worthy of the label quite honestly.

If that includes the BBC and Sky, then so be it.
