I've never understood why GMTV run their own news operation. Surely it would be cheaper to either use ITN or Sky (as TV-am did in their dying days).

Who are you Charles Allen?

I'm sure there's enough cost cutting going on in TV without giving them ideas

I don't think it's cost-cutting, it just makes sense. If we were in the situation we had about 20 years ago then Breakfast TV made alot of profit so a News operation wouldn't be much of a problem to provide.

Where as now GMTV have a lower audience, lower income from Advertising hence all the sponsorship and the former competitions. It just doesn't seem right that ITV has a 75% stake in GMTV and yet it provides a seperate (and IMO a rather poorer) News service that costs money, where it is not needed. Why not pay ITN a little more money on their contract and provide it to GMTV, keep Presenation on the South Bank if you want to.

ITV also don't forget makes their own News bulletins throughout England and Wales outside of London, surely that's no problem is it?

If TV-am managed to contract to Sky News during 1992 and if CITV can appear during GMTV's hours on ITV1, why can't ITV News?

Only this week BBC Breakfast had Alex Bushell reporting for Breakfast in Devon, when surely a BBC South West reporter could've done it.

Alex Bushill is the BBC reporter based in Plymouth for network radio and TV.

GMTV News and GMTV use ITN for it's technical resources, sat truck, mircowave links etc.

Your Keith Chegwin cash on your doorstep type OB's are facilitated by ITN.

I agree with all of you really and i can see it from both sides, but isn't GMTV supposed to be a separate channel and then ITV1 starts at 9.25, because that's what i understood it to be. I do think that GMTV should keep their own news and i too like Penny - she gives an uplifting to some of the more light hearted stories, but i wish it would go back to the way it was before the slight update last year where all the stories making the news at the top of the hour were reported on by the newsreader, and i think the backdrop and generally the studio needs to feel more newsy!
