Has Trevor McDonald ever really been involved in election night coverage. Certainly didn't play any significant role in the 1997, 2001 and 2005 elections, and can't say I've seen clips of him involved in earlier ones - Jon Snow fronted ITN's coverage in 1992.

I don't think he has, apart from some election special News at Tens over the years. Jon Snow was an interesting choice to host the 1992 coverage, before that year it was usually Alastair Burnet... can't say if or not Trev had any part in election night coverage even when Burnet was still there though.

Seems strange to watch Snow hosting on ITV but of course this was when ITV/C4 was much closer and ITN newscasters could appear on both channels without there being any fuss or confusion.

With today's news, is there a possibility of an early general election?

Your wish was granted at about 16:05. The link went down so they went back to the studio and the presenter spoke to Jon Craig who was at Downing Street.

The debate rules have been announced today....

Broadcasters agree on rules for leaders' debates

Three major broadcasters - the BBC, ITV and Sky - have agreed on the rules for hosting party leaders' debates in the run-up to the general election.

The three 90-minute sessions will begin by focusing on domestic policies, international affairs and the economy.

The studio audiences will then be able to ask direct questions on any subject, with viewers doing the same via e-mail.

Labour's Gordon Brown, Tory David Cameron and Lib Dem Nick Clegg agreed last year that they would appear.

The BBC is to hold separate party leader election debates in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

More of the technical detail is available on the following PR. It's interesting that there'll be no Commercial Breaks in the ITV and BSB debates.

I've got to say how misinformed the journo from the Guardian is with this interview and 'opinion' of Alastair Stewart. He is by far the most politically experienced at ITN and more knowledgeable on politics than all of ITN's political people put together. To quote the fact he now resides on the Evening News and in perhaps unsuitable for the role ahead is complete nonsense.

I really rate Al, and can't wait to see him in action, both with this debate and with ITN's Election programme.
