Looks like they were (understandably) a bit worried about what he would do next after frog marching and saluting the camera.
Did he really have to interrupt him? I don't see why.

I really like the BBC titles, particularly the music. I do like it when broadcasters maintain traditions like keeping election music but the new theme is great, far more dramatic than what came before and I think it's possible that some of the people who don't like it aren't seeing through their disappointment that its predecessor has been dropped.
I particularly like the use of quotes, which is a very powerful and IMO underused feature. I'm always harping on about it but the titles from RTÉ's The Week in Politics remain one of my favourite bits of pres, even if they are starting to show their age. Well worth a watch.

Interesting article about the new music commissioned for the BBC and ITV election night programmes. Seems the Beeb's theme is performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra which I'm sure will bring a wry smile to Dave Hewson's face.

Yes and for something that is only played 2 or 3 times (if that) on the night, is it that important anyway? Most of us wouldn't notice if there was no title sequence at all

Well you'll get it four times during Election Breakfast (with Big Ben showing the hour), and yes, Breakfast will be in HD as well

In the Beeb's defence, they are using the election music more this time than ever before. Different versions of the music have been used for all the debates (Prime Ministerial and regional), the Paxman interviews and the main programme itself. Bits of the music have cropped up elsewhere on the BBC too - some regions have used the sting into Election coverage for example. I have read somewhere that the BBC Concert Orchestra were in session anyway and worked on this theme in a matter of a few days in and around other work.
I'm going to throw in a granade at this point and say that I never liked that Wakeman theme anyway. Listen to the 2005 theme (on the page linked to in the post above) which I believe is pretty close to the original version and it really sounds dated IMO (and not in a good way). It could have been re-orchestrated perhaps but that wouldn't have saved much in terms of orchestra, arranger and studio time.
I reall like the new theme and I think it will perhaps be used more than in previous years - they've always done montages as election night draws to a conclusion and I've no reason to doubt that this year will be the same. There are opt-out and opt-in stings too which are oddly reminiscent of David Fenton's Breakfast News stings from the 80s/90s.

The new Election music sounds incredibly dated to me - hugely reminiscent of Breakfast Time/Breakfast News themes - and just a bit un-memorable, and a bit "newsy". The titles just strike me as very dull and uninspired - though I guess they sort of link in with the projection of the results against Big Ben/St Stephens Tower. It all feels a bit early 90s to me.
Personally I think King Arthur is gloriously OTT, dramatic and bombastic but with a witty sense of humour underlying it all. The music edit at the end of the 1997 coverage worked brilliantly. Precisely because it is so typically 70s Prog Rock - and totally unlike any other news music, I think it worked really well.
I can imagine having King Arthur on my iPod - but not the new theme...

Yes it did - they're all on TV Ark. Unlike this theme though, the 2001 one was rather good. Also like the studio that year - based around a "V" rather than the usual circular arrangement we've seen in some form since at least 1992. Having browse the clips yesterday though, I think "Arthur" was stronger in the 90's than the 2005 version.
Apologies if this has already been raised, but didn't the BBC's Vote 2001 coverage also use a different theme to Arthur? And I don't mean the BBC Parliament/David Lowe remix - I recall a totally different theme was used. I can't find any clips on YouTube though.

I agree. I thought the whole Vote 2001 brand was very strong - majestic theme, good logo, impressive studio. Even the main desk was a giant V, wasn't it?
In all honesty, while this year's studio is very fancy, I'm just not sure it's quite as classy as the 2001 and 2005 efforts. It feels a bit over the top.
