And as for the postal vote point - the system is at fault there as there is no way the candidates should even be able to get into a position where they know any details about postal votes which have come in.
Party agents are permitted to be in the room when the postal votes are opened, just like they're allowed to observe at the counts.

(Also, today I was doing a bit of phone canvassing for a candidate, and one person told me that they'd already voted by post, and who they'd voted for. I think that I wouldn't be allowed to ask them, but if they volunteer that information, that's fine.)

I wouldn't have thought that any vote could be opened before the polls close on Thursday.

I assume that's a Lambie Nairn effort - seems to be very much in keeping with the rather dull current theme BBC News has. Music is nothing special at all either. Will Wales, Scotland, NI have their own titles?

And I guess now the BBC have put them online I'll be tuning into ITV at 9.55pm on Thursday to see how they open proceedings.

Thought this would intrest some.

Really find it odd why ITN don't call on the services of Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru-Murthy for the ITV coverage, it'd give them an ideal Paxman team to deal with the in depth issues. They really shouldn't be silenced tomorrow night.

It's likely Jon Snow at least is contracted to C4 directly, not ITN - and I suspect even if their C4 contracts allowed it, ITV wouldn't want to be seen as having to bring in outsiders to beef up their election team.

This certainly used to happen, I believe, but of course that is when news on both ITV and Channel 4 were clearly branded as ITN. It would make less sense to join up nowadays, though it'd be a good idea to bring the two teams together to provide a solid "ITN" election night coverage. Election nights used to feature a mixture of ITV and Channel 4 News faces: Alastair Burnet, Alastair Stewart, Peter Sissons, Jon Snow, etc., and for an example, ITV's Election 1992 was hosted by Jon Snow with Alastair Stewart and Julia Somerville. I believe it was around this point, maybe mid-90s, that the two news services grew closer to their respective channels and further away from each other.

The opening titles for the BBC coverage have been posted on the BBC Editors Blog.

Lacking the drama that Arthur adds!

I agree. It's a nice orchestral tune, but completely devoid of the excitement of election night! Quite silly to have got rid of that imposing Arthur music for a feeble reason.

And seeing as we're one day away... what is everybody's allegiance going to be tomorrow evening? I'll also be tuning into ITV to view the opening segment (I don't think they had titles in 2005? I hope this time round they do). I think I will flit between ITV, the BBC and Sky throughout the night.

Ummm. To my ears it sounds like an odd mix of the BBC News themes from the late 80s thrown at the CBS Evening News theme - a strange concoction. Oh, and why only two quotes - from Thatcher and Blair?

Balance more than likely - They are former prime ministers and bits from their winning speeches are included. One Labour and One Conservative. Remember, the titles are running at 2155 which, in theory, is still bound by the BBC Election Guidelines.

I'm sure it'll only affect those playing election vote chicken and trying to cast their vote as late as possible.

Are the BBC nations all running until 6am, or will some either finish early or return after Breakfast?

Some details on STV's plans - do they usually do their own broadcast too?

I usually manage until about 6am before needing a nap. I think I'll mainly watch the BBC, but perhaps dip into ITV and Sky just to get a feel for their presentation.

If either ITV or Sky strike me as markedly better than the BBC, then I may switch allegiance part way through the night.

Thought it probably was. From what I can see UTV are only doing their own thing on Friday, with shows at 9.30am, 5.30pm and 8pm.

Are there usually any regional opt-outs during the election night shows on both the BBC and ITV? I'm sure they'll probably be one in the first hour or two which will basically be the late news, but do they continue beyond that?

NO! Arthur has gone. Again. It's not fair, I actually looked forward to listening to that, I'm in my local CCHQ tomorrow, watching it with the local candidate. But, now it's ruined.

That is a terrible theme! Stinks of trying to Americanise it because Arthur was far too British! No gravitas whatsoever.

Dear POV, has Auntie Beeb fallen out with Rick Wakeman?

There are some themes you just don't change completely: Blue Peter, Match of the Day, Panorama, Coronation St, EastEnders, BBC Election Night, etc etc
