I think in the end though that's turned out not to be the case and something like just 30 will be counting the next day - though of course with votes so close they will be crucial as well.

Yep - as potentially will be the NI seats that often don't get reported until later.

I think the biggest reason that Election shows might run later is that a large number of councils are not paying for overnight counts, and will thus declare much later than previously. This means that we won't know the results in some seats until a lot lather than in previous General Elections.

This isn't as bad as it would have been, because of a provision in a law passed just before Parliament was dissolved, which requires that counts for parliamentary elections begin within 4 hours unless there is a good reason why they cannot. It is now the case that it is only 20-30 seats that won't start counting until the next day, and most of those are not target seats, so unless there is a huge electoral wave, they shouldn't have much impact on the result (but if it is a tight result between a majority/minority, we will have to wait for those seats before it can be officially said that one party has gone past the 326 winning post).

ITV pretty foolish not to at least have an extended lunchtime bulletin. Keeping This Morning is understandable as that can break into the news and I think by then there will be an appetite for a less formal look at the unfolding events, but I'd definitely then go back to the election show either 12.30-2pm or 1.30-3pm,

That's what they did in 2001, they finished at 10.30 for This Morning - and I remember they kept on going back to the election studio and showing Blair going to the Palace, because I remember Fern Britton discussing the shininess of Number 10's door - but then came back for an hour at twelve and another hour at two, so they actually finished after the Beeb. The twelve o'clock hour was little more than the lunchtime news, though, it was mostly pre-recorded reports.

Last time round they ended at 10.30 and that was it. But you'd think this election would be a bit more interesting.

For those who were asking earlier it appears that Breakfast will not be shown on Friday 7th May. Instead it appears that at 6AM there will be a presenter change. Jon Sopel and Sian Williams will take over 'from the election studio' and coverage will run non-stop on BBC One until 2pm.

By the way, I'm about 99.9999999% certain that Dave and the Jeremies will be back by 10am at the latest and that Jon and Sian will only do the breakfast bit. Although in the previous two elections they did Breakfast from the Breakfast studio, before that, although it went under the Breakfast Time/News branding, they were always in the election studio, Frank Bough was there in 1983 and 1987 (there's a clip of the latter on YouTube), Nicholas Witchell in 1992 and Justin Webb in 1997, all sitting in David Dimbleby's seat.

Before breakfast telly began full time, they would still have a presenter change for the breakfast bit, Michael Barratt did it in 1970 and both 1974 elections to give Cliff/Alistair the chance to have a break. In 1979, David did present the whole thing but Sue Lawley joined him at breakfast time, presumably to make it a bit friendlier and more approachable for the wider audience, so she got Bob McKenzie to explain the Swingometer and so on.

Counting in Northern Ireland will begin at 10pm that night for the first time, which means people in Northern Ireland will get their own 'Election 2010' programme with Noel Thompson etc.

Indeed...here is the 1987 open from Youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5GV8SbofgM
The 1997 opener used to be on The TV Room...don't suppose its floating about anywhere now?

I also remember William Hague resigning during Breakfast in 2001, just before 8am if memory serves me well!

I'm surprised that the National media haven't picked up on the fact that Sinn Fein do not take their seats at Westminster and with 5MPs that changes the whole complexion of a hung parliament as the Largest party would in reality need a few seats less. Also in Northern Ireland if the UUP can possibly win say two seats this will also be crucial in the final outcome.

I see that BBC Northern Ireland has its own progamme, on BBC1 NI, with a mixture of Noel Thompson, etc, in Belfast, interspersed with the national coverage with David Dimbleby.

However, BBC2 NI is showing the national coverage that English viewers get on BBC1.

Assume Scotland are doing something similar?

And Wales?

Anyone know what happens the day after the election if there is no clear winner? Does Brown go back to Downing Street?

With the Lib Dems recent surge, the influence of the smaller parties in NI, Scotland and Wales has diminished. Labour and the Conservatives will need the support of the Liberals to get over the line.

I think that Mr Clegg has fallen prey to that old thing called hubris if his comments over the past few days are anything to go by. A week is a long time in politics and the effects of the first debate are already starting to wear off.
