I know it's not very enterprising, but I think just a video wall works better than all this green-screen stuff. Or pehaps, Sky's large touch screen video wall, with some of the graphics applied in the foreground (like Sky's Business News).

yeah but the BBC don't have anything like a massive studio covered in three sides with highly advanced video walls and very likely a celing full of free-D systems to allow them to integrate virtual graphics into the presentation.

oh.

I have to say Jeremy's CSO reports looked bloody awful. The whole white thing just looked messy, and the green screen was really reflecting on his cheeks.

I don't think TC7 or N6 have the Free-D targets (unlike the Sky News centre) - they're certainly not visible in this photo of TC7

Does anyone know where they're producing the VR stuff at the moment? They picture quality, keying and lighting are all far worse than normal. I do agree though, there's no reason we have to have the full VR "experience" currently, he could present the same data, without the gimmicks from the corner of TC7/N6.

Like this explosion in a 3d graphics factory?

Let's just pray he doesn't bring out anything like Ming's Bling or Calamity Clegg.

Anything but that again... Shocked

Brown heckled. Has Sky News found out if he has a political connection?

From what I've heard of the Beeb's election night studio, brace yourselves. It does sound very impressive - giant plasmas, videowalls, VR, the works. And huge.

ITV press release about their coverage:
http://www.itv.com/presscentre/pressreleases/programmepressreleases/itvunveilsgeneralelection2010coverage/default.html

I see that Jonathan Dimbleby is doing a weekly Thursday night discussion programme during the campaign, but putting it head to head with Question Time is typically cynical useless ITV PSB scheduling.

Looking at the 15 April schedule, it's non-stop news and politics on ITV from 8.30pm to 12.05am as the monthly regional politics shows are on.

It did look a bit messy at times, but overall wasn't that bad. Just seemed like there was some bad lighting in places that enchanced the green screen reflection.

And if this is a sign of the election night swingometer to come (they did mention something about a new look) then it appears they've turned it on its side and made it much easier to see which constituences would change hands based on the swing:

It was god awful. He looked like the hulk at times that's how bad the green screen was not to mention he had to keep looking at the floor for one reason or another

On this video there are numerous keying errors throughout the video - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8606078.stm - along with Jeremy being dayglow green with the hands of the hulk in certain shots.

It's pretty awful by their usual standards. I agree perhaps they'd be better off doing it in one of the regular studios, certainly on election night anyway.

Is all the CSO stuff up until election night filmed at ITN?

I'd be surprised if it was, given that it looks so awful and it usually looks so much better.

I've seen a lot worse to be honest, but from the reaction here it's like BBC News has just unveiled this as their brand new studio. No virtual setup is perfect and I've never been a fan of the style but for a quick report that was just a couple of minutes long, I don't think it's the end of the world. I think we can safely say that Jeremy Vine will be in the studio, along with everyone else so I don't think a slight CSO bodge up is a sign of the coverage to come.
