I agree that the atrium has looked brilliant in years gone by, but I think you might be disappointed this year
How unfortunate. The virtual studio never works for election night. Lacks the drama, excitement. The 2 years it came from the atrium were the best. It just looks so well polished.

I'd hate to see ITN stay in the main news studio for this. There was never a better year when they built their election studio in the atrium.

Esther actually did a couple of elections for the Beeb, in 1974 she was "In The City" and interviewed various cleaners and businessmen about the state of the nation, in 1983 she was in Downing Street as you say, and in 1987 she was in Piccadilly Circus interviewing the Great British Public, as was Gavin Campbell. And of course her husband Demond Wilcox was in Traflagar Square for most of the seventies elections doing the time-honoured Bit Of Fun.
At the time, That's Life was actually made by the current affairs department - but that's because it was moved from features as Desmond Wilcox was Head of Features and there was a massive row over him favouring That's Life over everything else, which came to such a head that Wilcox quit and That's Life was moved to a different department to avoid ill-feeling.
In fact, Cat, I recall an election of several years ago (can't recall how far back) and all outlets had their correspondents dotted around the usual hot spots (Westminster, Number Ten, Leader's Constituencies, Trafalgar Square, wherever). I specifically recall that amongst the Lawleys, Dimbleby's, Paxman and Warks on the BBC, they had opted for none other than Esther Rantzen to be their correspondent outside Number Ten!!

I guess Martin Stanford will do the swingometer related stuff, as he did for the European Elections
Wonder if Five will take Sky again overnight, as they did in 2005. Or if they will have supercasino instead?
Would also imagine Thompson, Murnaghan and Stanford (sp.) also being in the fray for Sky News.

Don't ITN usually hire out their virtual studio to the BBC for the Jeremy Vine bits?
If the Beeb are doing their stuff in HD I guess that means that they're using TC1 rather than Millbank/TC7/N9 which have all been used for local or European elections in recent times.
Julie Etchingham and Mary Nightingale are also to feature as part of ITN's coverage. I'd put my bets on Julie anchoring the virtual parliament, swingometer stuff.

For as long as I can remember, the BBC has always used TC1 for General Elections.

True, but using a studio which is already on long term hire to News would make it a much cheaper operation, so in the current penny pinching climate you could see them using TC7 or N9 for it.

Yes, though ITN now has two virtual studios - Studio 2 which is used for ITV News and Studio 1 which was used as a back-up for the ITV News Channel until 2005 and before that was the main ITV News studio (pre-2004).

So there is speculation today that because the Tories are 1 point lower in the opinion polls (but still within the margin of error), that Brown might call it early - say April.
Remind me, how many weeks in advance do you usually get the announcement for an election ?

It varies. There isn't any statute that stipulates a set period of time for the campaign. In fact, if Parliament had been dissolved last Tuesday (2nd February) then a General Election could have been held by the end of the month. I think that there is a minimum requirement of 16 days in which to have all the official paperwork processed.
