would this be a 25th march election?

The political blogger Paul Staines, aka 'Guido Fawkes' is reporting that BBC News has shifted to 'Red Alert' and is expecting an election announcement this weekend.

Political gossip but interesting...

Isn't Brown going to appear at the Iraq Inquiry on March 5?

Not writing it off before hearing it (it might turn out to be good) but they did try doing this in 2001 and it didn't go down particularly well, with Wakeman returning in 2005.

He is indeed. As far as I know, there is nothing to say that he can't appear at the Inquiry during the campaign period though.

And the Iraq Inquiry is about as pointless as a Michael Jackson trial. People have their opinions beforehand, and the verdict won't change those opinions.

Yes there is. As I said a few posts back, Chilcott has announced that the moment the election is called, he will suspend the Inquiry.

I stand corrected! Will be interesting to see what reaction Brown receives if he called an election and was perceived to be seen as dodging the Inquiry. I don’t think that this will be a major campaign issue but I still imagine the Tories would be keen to exploit it, at least partially.

Again, go back a few pages and read the back and forth between DVB Cornwall and myself. Yes, the PM will take some flack for such a move, but since the post about Guido Fawkes earlier on, I've done some thinking and I'm more convinced than ever that, given the state of the polls (one of which shows Labour 5 points behind), the bullying allegations, various problems with the economy, the Party, the possibility of a Budget (which would not be good), the 'forces of hell' comment from Darling, and the Chilcott Inquiry, then the sensible thing - at this time - would be to call an election. It COULD get even better for Brown, but it could also get worse; at 5 points behind, I'd take my chances.

All I'll say at this point is that he has until Monday March 8th to dissolve Parliament if he wishes to call an election on March 25th. There could be a hell of a lot of egg on my face by the end of this if he doesn't, and, for someone with a PhD in political science, it's going to be embarrassing.

On the BBC election theme - SACRILEGE! How can they ditch the Excalibur theme? It conveys everything that's appropriate about and embodied in an election; it conveys drama, jingoism, patriotism and, in all honesty, tells you that something is happening. The last time they ditched it, it didn't work. Why repeat the mistake?

Wasn't that because Wakeman quite actively campaigned for the Tories that year? I could be wrong though. The one they used that year was the same/very similar to the ones that had been used for the Local Elections and US elections the year before.

The Wakeman theme came back in 2005 so no doubt will return again in 2014/15 if the new one is a stinker.

The election will take place on May 6. Why don't the media just get over it and wait patiently.

Hang on - I hope the BBC haven't gone and paid someone to write a theme for a programme that's only on every five years (well, maybe a bit more, but you know what I mean).

With all this cost-cutting going on, why didn't they go for a library piece, which their blanket licence would already cover?

(I'm having a grumpy day today, but I really hope that's not true).

Bah!
