Sue Lawley was amazing in that incident. Incrediby cool. Even the lesbians were impressed and gave her a glowing review in the report in the Nine O'Clock News that night. They weren't so complementary about Nick Witchell, who sat on one of them.

One of the funniest moments must be David Robertson interviewing some woman off a sink estate in Portsmouth about hounding a local man of the estate because of a suspected paedophile case.
He asked his question only to get the answer, "Can't understand a word he's saying, he's scotch"

But the winner must be Peter Coe, who read the script, "Delighting her fans, the Queen Mother attends church accompanied by members of her family" ...to pictures of a herd of BSE affected cattle stampeding through a farm gate.

David Dimbleby presenting on Panorama in the 70's gets my vote.

Film and VT inserts didn't turn up, and a rather borderline stressed phone call up to the gallery to find out what has gone wrong.
When the director tells him "you are on your own for the moment, sunny" he just sits in his chair, folds his arms and stares around the studio with a bemused look on his face.

Quality television.

I notice the director thought the lesbian was a man. Who'd have thought it?

In a protest against Section 28 of the Local Government Act, which forbade the 'promotion of homosexuality' in schools, a number of protestors invaded the Six O' Clock News studio as the programme went on air.

One chained herself to Nicholas Witchell's seat and he reportedly had to sit on her as a result. I believe he also put his hand over her mouth to try and muffle her shouting.

They were ejected within a few minutes, but not before a lot of shouting over the opening headlines.

That is hilarious. The bit where someone in the gallery says, "Oh f**king hell, we've got nutters in the studio!", and Sue saying, "If you can possibly ignore the background news (sic) we'll try and continue with the news", but as others have said, the professionalism of the woman was impressive.

A similar thing happened on the LWT News some years ago when, during a report on mad cow disease, a farmer (talking about one of his herd) declared that "this old cow will have to be put down within the week", only for the cameras to cut to Pam Royle right at that very moment... Laughing Laughing

you would have thought at the first sign of the protesters, the director would have cut to a slide and informed bbc one transmission.

not quite news, but who can forget the edition of central weekend live (studio based chat show) when some women footballers got rather too rowdy and the show was taken off air, treating us all to a nice long airing of the central ident montage centrama.

and more recently from midlands today...

Of course there was another classic Midlands Today moment. Who would have thought a burst balloon could cause such commotion?

This'll rake the memory but my personal favourite was Angela Rippons, yes her, classic "We apologise to our deaf viewers for the loss of subtitles"

You can't get much better than that!

Wot no Mollie Green / Wonder Moose screen caps from the 730 Breakfast bully on CIN day 2004 ?

On the subject of Central Weekend, was this the same edition where they accidentally cut LWT to air, who was transmitting their own regional prog & ISTR it was a bit risque, from later reports?

(On the subject of women's football, WM presenter of the time, Miles Barter was on the same show when it kicked off, because I remember ringing Waddo & Julie when they were doing the Late Show on WM(Midlands BBC) at the time, & telling them about it, then Barter mentioned it on his following Sunday show.)
