Noteworthy this bucks the trend of making senior appointments at BBC News from outside the BBC, notably the press (James Harding, Ian Katz, Sarah Sands, Amol Rajan).

David Holdsworth's departure also coincides with the BBC's local radio stations being given more editorial freedom to decide their target audience.
