Err - no. Totally OTT and most Brits would think they were watching a spoof if that style were transplanted here. Totally overproduced with very little content, and such a cliched, and dated newsroom set and 3D rendered chrome graphics dating back to Channel Four News in the 80s.
The problem with US News production is that it is both incredibly conservative (lots of technical innovations with clever graphics boxes) and incredibly commercial - but doesn't seem to ever innovate in terms of design and production. There are exceptions - but that opening sequence was terrible in design terms - I felt like I was being timewarped back to the 80s AND attacked by news at the same time.
The total urgency, continual "Alerts" etc. conspire to actually not tell you very much that is important - just stuff that is kind of, you know, happening about now.
To be honest, I'd prefer this breathless, 'NEWS ALERT: CAT STUCK UP TREE' style of news instead of the mushy, foamy, 'and now some puppy's going to lick your faaaace....", laid-back presentation style.
I saw it again on Friday and compared to Monday it was a much better bulletin, though Kaplinsky fawning over Brucie wasn't really neccessary, but then again all bulletins featured Brucie celebrating his 80th birthday (again?) yesterday.
Content is the main criticism - I like the look alot more than I thought I would, and Natasha seems much more at home here than she ever did at the BBC.
Only thing I'd like is another presentation area in the studio so Natasha isn't always sat on the couch - I think a standing podium in the style of the desk would work very well.
And also I hope they've got a sombre version of the theme available as I don't think this would be appropriate at all for major tragedies or significant deaths. I know the old 5 News had an alternative version they used in the week Diana died. (anyone got that?)

To be fair, most American newscasts are somewhat less over the top than that, although they are still very bold.

Yep - it was a Fox station ISTR...
However some US stations do seem to do seemingly endless local news - when surely there can't be that much to report and much of it is repetition...
I think, of the top of my head most stations have local news at 5am - 7am, 12pm, 4pm/5pm depending on states until 6.30pm (7pm if a Fox station) and then 11pm.
The Saturday Five bulletin had a few minor technical problems with the sports reports coming out in a different order than Helen Fospero expected. Added to that Sir Tony Hopkins doing impressions of Tommy Cooper was included in the sports bulletin too. So perhaps unofficially that makes doing funny impressions a sport now. <?>
Nice to see that it brought a hot flush to Helen's face too .

Yeah it is a Fox station I know it well. I was on holiday in the region last year and took alot of the local tv newscasts in - it is the worst of the bunch, but not by a long way, and that is a very typical news open not only in that area but in America generally.
There is just too much going on, and it is very very quick. The way they'd cues up the VTs especially the Iraqi one with the explosion happening almost as soon as it's cued, it's shock and awe. That is not a title sequence it's more a promo. Something which more American Newscasts seem to be moving towards.
WSVN 7 is, in particular, one of the more tabloid stations. I believe it's based in South Florida, maybe Miami, and is incredibly breathless when it comes to reporting crime, to the point where some hotels refused to provide it to their guests in the 1990s, for fear of terrifying them with their by-the-minute reporting of every single murder, rape, stabbing, theft, robbery, burglary, speeding offence whatever.

Yeah that fits, Fox News is all tasers and murders at the minute
I e-mailed five about the composers of the new five news music. This is what they had to say.
Quote:
The new Five News theme music is entitled “Five Mammoth News 08”. It was composed specially for the programme by Julian Ronnie and Lee McCutcheon and is not available commercially.
