At the end of this article in which C4 are proud to announce they lose more money from C4 News than any other programme, it's mentioned that from Sept 3rd the 7pm programme on Five will be extended to 30 minutes again.

Do you think it's likely that next year then they'll ditch the 5.30pm bulletin to make way for Neighbours - or perhaps have a 15 minute bulletin before it at 5.15pm or something?

I don't see why Five News couldn't be on at 5.00pm and let Neighbours take the 5.30pm, I think it's worth a shot as no other bulletin has tried that slot yet..

I'm slightly surprised that Five has gone back to a half hour on Mon to Thur after making such an effort to drop it 2 years ago. That was a mistake in my view as the more analytical discussion driven show was a good companion to the normal news at 5.30.

I think they'd be foolish to move the flagship news which has held the 5-30 slot for 10 years . I see the line up as being ;

5.30 Five News
6.00 Neighbours
6.30 Home and Away
7.00 Five News

The 5.30 news will either stay where it is, move to 5pm or be axed. Logical option says put Neighbours at 5.30pm, to keep viewers for the evening says 6.30pm.

Isint it the least watched bulliten at 7pm, with it being up against C4 News.

The flagship bulletin has only been on at 5.30pm since July 2001, with the launch of Home and Away. 10 years ago it was on at 8.30pm, moving to 7pm then to 6pm then to 5.30pm and 7.30pm in 2001 and then the latter bulletin moved to 7pm in 2002/ 03. I think the new extended programme may have something to do with the impending changes which are about to take place at five news.

They'd be more foolish though taking Neighbours out of the 5.30pm slot though surely - they've already gone on record saying something to that effect.

I don't think they'll move 5 News to 5pm as it's a bit early and impacts too much on their afternoon movie slots, but a short bulletin at 5.15pm then a full bulletin at 7pm would make more sense. I think actually a 15 minute bulletin at 5.15pm would do pretty well ratings wise.

Have to say though the original 8.30pm slot was the best IMO, though originally it was lined up to air at 8pm but switched to 8.30pm at last minute for some reason.

P.S. Is Rob Butler still AWOL?

Sounds like a damn fine excuse to shorten the cricket highlights to thirty, instead of forty-five minutes.

Another terrestrial broadcaster doing away with the cricket. Thank goodness for Sky Sports.

as mentioned, it's probably more to do with their move to show more 'user-generated content' than Neighbours' arrival.

Given that Five can't schedule 2 news bulletins within 60 minutes of each other their options are to go earlier with the news as you say so they can if they wanted to then keep Neighbours in it's present 5.35 slot. That or move the 7pm bulletin to 7.30 again and put themselves against the bbc news at 6pm and split up the soaps / entertainment which is unlikely.

I don't watch the soap but I was surmising that Neighbours fans would rather watch it instead of the BBC 1 news at Six. Perhaps it is easier and more lucrative if Five move the news and let the soap take it's slot.

Hmmmm.

At long last, perhaps a mechanism to have a sturdy bulletin anchored by the sturdy partnership of John Suchet and Moira Stuart!! Laughing Laughing Laughing (One hopes.....................let's start a campaign!)
