The contrast between Matt and Emma is staggering. Matt can clearly move from being authoritative to lightening up enough for the fluffier stories on the running order.

Now compare Emma just now. No natural flow on the two-way with Catherine. The same monotone delivery for every piece. What GMTV showed is that Emma finds it hard to deliver in a relaxed style for formats such as GMTV and 5 which have similar target audiences, even when she did lighten up, compared to the likes of Penny Smith, Kate Garraway or even Fiona Phillips, it didn't come over as natural.

Emma's delivery isn't exactly 5'esque. Like GMTV she's just a bit too formal in her delivery.

She's clearly great on a rolling news channel, but hosting a terrestrial bulletin isn't her forte.

I haven't seen 5 News (at 7) as I'm away from my television, but I suspected this would be the case. I think she'd be very good on a national BBC or ITV bulletin, but my feeling is Five News is too GMTV in its feel for her. Similarly, I can't imagine Matt Barbet ever hosting a national BBC or ITV broadcast.

When at the BBC, I'm sure Matt Barbet was on BBC Breakfast a few times...

He was indeed, not just on weekend breakfast but he also was on the sofa a few times.

I was meaning I can't imagine Matt Barbet ever presenting the BBC News at Six or Newsnight, whereas I think Emma could have fitted in quite nicely had a position come up.

To be fair this is Emma's first night - Matt's been doing this for years now. That said, I agree she's better suited to more formal bulletins.

Polly Whitehouse and Philippa Hall also had first nights on the main bulletin and there were no complaints. Awareness of the format is a must.

BBC Breakfast isn't that much different when they're reading the news...

Overall, I think I preferred the previous look of Five News. I think the lighter news stories should be read from a sofa... having a presenter standing up makes it feel a bit more serious for some reason.

Either that or on wheels or something so it could be easily gotten out of the way (the whole 'podium' thing's gone).

Doesn't seem to look too difficult actually the raised plinth with the OKTV! sofa may not need to move much at all

But it does feel a bit like a gameshow now - the music, the laptop stand bit, the studio, and how there is a large "5" in the logo.

The red, blue and white colour scheme makes it feel a bit Sky Newsy too...

The laptop stand, if I'm not mistaken, is also used in the new Westminster studios of Sky News - I'm sure I've seen Sarah Hughes use it a couple of times from the newsroom there. I agree that the blue lighting is quite Sky News styled, but the red isn't very Sky News IMO.

Very nice opening titles... rather Catchphrase-esque

Exactly. It was the first thought that came into my head when I saw it - it's this! The colour scheme is very in the face.

Had to laugh at the stylist credits for the weather girl too Laughing

Another good interpretation of the logo although it looks to me as though Matt Barbet has wandered onto the set of some kind of Currys-PC World ad...

Has 5 News Weather always had the hair and wardrobe credits at the beginning? How bizarre!

No. It's so tacky!

Why would you possibly want to know?

It's just another excuse for more sponsorship.

Has Debenhams struck a station-wide deal to become C5's chief "stylist"?

Ridiculous - credit the stylist, but not those who actually provide the weather info.

Who did the 8pm update - seems strange just to have Emma for the 7pm news. I assumed Matt would do lunch/5pm and Emma the 7pm then the 8pm/9pm updates.

Not much to say about the look - not brilliant at all, but not absolutely awful.
