As for the earlier coments what i was saying was that ITV was the priority and rightly so. The reason i was saying it was because the guy at five news had said that ITN had to in certain circumstances hold footage back until it got its first showing on the evening news (therefore missing five's 5:30). i wasn't knocking ITN or anything.

The point is that some are inferring that ITN was somehow behaving improperly/unfairly/mean-spiritedly by not allowing Five News access to material paid for by ITV before it had been aired by ITV.

That's right - that was my point. There may well have been cases where material had to be broadcast on ITV before it was released to Five, but I doubt if this contravened any contractual agreements already set up. In other words, if it was ITV material it had to be broadcast on ITV first. The reverse was probably true for Five originated material.

No, that's fine, North East! I didn't mean to acuse you of that, and you'd be entitled to that view if you had been knocking ITN! I was just suggesting that the agreements to access of material might have worked slightly differently to the way some people may have imagined. And if the latest contract with Sky really was worth more than the previous ITN one, then that can only be good for the quality of Five's new news service. It's good (and yes - surprising) to hear that the channel came to their senses and realised they needed to plough more money in.

The only interesting thing on 5 News recently is the sky newsreaders doing the very late updates.
They had Kevin Owen on earlier in the week and tonight it was Anjali Rao.
It would be better if they had her on regularly.

It was the Five News relaunch party last night - hence Kirsty's absence:

There was an impressive turn out for last night's drinks do to celebrate the relaunch of Five News, which is now produced by Sky News. Five's Kirsty Young, Donal MacIntyre and Kate Sanderson were to be seen mingling with Kay Burley, Julie Etchingham and Adam Boulton from Sky News at the bash, held in swanky new west end venue, the Soho Hotel (formerly a car park, since you ask). The suits from both broadcasters were also out in force, including Five's Jane Lighting, Dan Chambers and Chris Shaw; and from Sky, Dawn Airey, Nick Pollard and Sophie Turner Laing. Plus ones included Young's hubby, Soho House boss Nick Jones, and Sanderson's fiance, a certain P Y Gerbeau. Sun editor turned PR man Stuart Higgins also rocked up, with Prince Charles' press spokesman Paddy Harveson in tow. Sky Sports News presenter Diana Stewart, the M&S model best known for dating Jonny Wilkinson, turned a few heads - but not as many as Five News weathergirl Lara Lewington, who turned up in a startlingly short skirt. Sky News anchor Kay Burley went for something slightly more sober, sporting a sombre black trouser suit with muted white piping. "That's because we thought the Pope was going to die," she explained. Hope the BBC tie department is as prepared.

Heading west
Last night's west end bash hosted jointly by Five and Sky News was supposed to be celebrating last month's relaunch of the terrestrial network's news service, which is now produced by the BSkyB-owned broadcaster. But neither Five news boss Chris Shaw or his Sky News counterpart Nick Pollard could resist a dig at ITN, which used to make Five News. "It's a bit like driving a car with a much better engine under the bonnet," was Shaw's take on the difference between Five News when it was produced by ITN and the new service made by Sky News. Pollard added: "What you see on the screen is without doubt better than what you saw before. I would say that, but I believe it." The impression that there is little love lost between Five and ITN was reinforced by the broadcaster's star news presenter, Kirsty Young. She was heard muttering that whenever ITN introduced a new round of cuts, the most obvious but most important things went like lighting and make-up. But after feeling like the poor relation at ITN's Gray's Inn Road HQ, it's apparently now all a big love in between Five News and Sky News down at the latter's base out in the west London suburb of Osterley. Shame about the commute though, eh Kirsty?

Will be interesting to see whether they are aired on Sky News as well as Five.

I can't imagine Sky wanting to miss out on such a great opportunity, especially as they're producing it.
