(And before you ask I'm not an engineer - though I did once move in engineering circles!)

Well, you certainly sound like one!! Which area, broadly, of the industry do you work in, without giving too much away??

That would be telling!

Oh, spoilsport!!! Go on, just a little clue... production, editing, studio crew???

That's reminiscent of a well-known business practice which I thought was illegal:
Sell a product/service at a loss, drive the [smaller] competition out of business then gouge all you can from the short-sighted 'consumers' who put you in that monopolistic position.

This isn't illegal- it's part of Tesco's core business strategy.

Although I doubt Sky would spend more than they tendered for- they lose enough money as it is (this is there chance to make back some of their loses on Sky News). When I read the statement about spending more in 2 weeks than a year under ITN, I assumed the correspondent was talking about the costs of setting up the expensive new studio. This is part of Sky's development of the building anyway- I'm sure much of the costings are reduced by shared development in the new Sky News studio next door, and by the installation of the same technical hardware and software.

They've done a very good job IMO. I like the set (especially the balcony) and the graphics are a lot nicer than ITN. A very slick job altogether. Good stuff Sky.

Kate Sanderson is doing well also.

Did anyone get a capture of that 'podium' Kate was standing on? It looked tiny. Shocked

Now look... are people watching the same newsreader as me? When people say "Good Job Kate Sanderson" do they mean the lifeless, expressionless monotoned news reader that tortoured my earlier morning when Moria wasnt about with her liad back, i look like i have a punture in my right buttock, Kate Sanderson.. The kate sanderson that frightened children on newround? What is the world coming too!

And where has Rob Butler gone... five news all the worse for him leaving! I cant see him anywhere...

Well the sports roundup just transmitted was a bit long winded, The Campbell piece could and should have been edited to half it's length.

Shall I refer you "Big Brownie" to the Libel and defamation act in relation to your comments about Kate's professional abilities?

I quite liked the Alistair Campbell piece. Couldn't see ITN doing anything like that.

I was disappointed to see the irritating Nick Powell presenting the sport.

Who says it is at a loss.

The issue seems to be that ITN couldn't offer Five their main correspondents because their main owner / customer insisted they were exclusive to ITV. C4 news is mainly an analysis programme.

The difference is that Sky offer Five their full coverage, plus a few exclusive correspondents.

That doesn't mean it is at a loss as you seem to think.

If you think a bit deeper - there is no way that ITV will allow their news service (ITN) to fall below a certain level, but similarly they will not allow a competitor to benefit from their investment..

What's more, analogue terrestrial viewers now get news from 3 providers, rather than 2 as happened before Christmas, and competition is enhanced.

Certainly not me, or at least I thought I was careful to make sure that people didn't think I was suggesting that in the lines after the ones you quoted.

In Kate Sanderson, Julie Etchingham and Kirsty Young I quite like their choice of female presenters and I don't have any objections to the new-look program though I'm sure Sky's shareholders would be happy to acknowledge that their motivation isn't increased choice for the analogue terrestrial viewer Very Happy
