The set is fine, but isn't suitable for five news. As someone said earlier, it looks designed for newsround or an entertainment news programme.
Also, does anyone know what the five news reporters not hired by Sky are going to do? In particular, what will Ben Ando and Gary Rogers (the former editor) be doing in the new year?

Well Ben Ando was reporting on BBC Breakfast this morning

Having been involved in launching new shows you tend to play it safe on the first few nights. What you don't is it looking crap, even if you have stuff you want to do you wait until everyone is happy with the basics. As c@t says give it a while and see what they do with studio/reports etc.

I haven't seen the broadcast in 16F16 yet - though I'd be surprised if they were mad enough to run a 4:3 studio and ARC the output.

Well that was my gut reaction on seeing the first few seconds of the show !

All the reports were presented as 16F16, including material that was definately native 12F12. I seem to recall Sky doing the same trick with the first incarnation of RI:SE ?

Hmm. Pre-recorded headlines? Charlie moved downstairs a bit fast, didn't he?

And when Charlie's standing in front of the screen, it's just like News 24 but with different colours...

That's exactly what I was thinking! Nice to see them making full use of the studio though.

There's been some nasty cropping on the reports coming from Sky News reporters, sadly - most noticeable on Chris Roberts' report just now where the top of his head was chopped off!

Nice to see Jeremy Thompson doing a live report - and his framing is much better. I can't imagine that he's got a separate 16:9 camera out there, so perhaps they've just pulled back a bit so the cropping won't affect the picture.

I should hope that anyone could walk down six steps in the space of ten seconds...

And as for ''oh it's just like News 24 with different colours", don't be so ridiculous. News 24 didn't pioneer the use of projector screens, nor the concept of standing up to present... funnily, the latter was a Five News regularity.

They seriously need to sort out the widescreen issues. Sky reporters have their heads cut off, etc. Looks absolutely terrible.

He said it looked like N24 with different colours - and it does LOOK like that. He never said oh look Five News have stolen the original idea that N24 created - it just looks the same. Dear god.

And edit - yes I know N24 never used the screens as an original idea.

I never said that News 24 did pioneer those things. Nor was it a complaint - just an observation.

In terms of current UK news presentation, it reminded me of News 24. Surely that's a fair enough observation to make?!

Well, ok... Channel 4 looks the same as Sky News because they have a videowall.

Got it.

Channel 4 have nicer screens now, compared to Sky News.
