I too was not as impressed as I thought I would be. The main story, obviously still the Tsunami tragedy is probably the reason why the bulletin felt reasonably short as a majority of the time was spent on this story.

The set looked good. More depth and a series of different focuses (such as the balcony where the five news updates take place). The colours are good. And the general feel of the 5.30pm bulletin is positive. But for some reason I still expected more.

The previous ITN version of five news seemed to be more intellectual and carried a wide range of stories and focuses. Such as the five news club poll which interacted with the viewers. Something like that is original on terestrial television and makes five news more appealing.

Overall I'm plesed with Skys take over but I feel there could have been that little bit more effort.

I also didn't like the tone of some of the reports - I though their main headline was somewhat taken out of context.

They seem to be going for a 'news with attitude' approach.

I think the real test will be on a normal news day when the agenda is dominated by domestic stories. Because of the international nature of the current news we saw a lot of Sky News stuff tonight and not so much of Five's own team of reporters.

The set is fine, but isn't suitable for five news. As someone said earlier, it looks designed for newsround or an entertainment news programme.
Also, does anyone know what the five news reporters not hired by Sky are going to do? In particular, what will Ben Ando and Gary Rogers (the former editor) be doing in the new year?

An average start is what I make of it.

Titles and Music....................Nothing special. In fact the music has a lack of anything.

Studio - Very nice, hopefully we will see it used more effectively as the week progresses.

Content - Again nothing special that made it stand out from what ITN were doing. If you cast your minds back to when 5 News began, the content was a lot better, fresher, and aimed at those who were fed up of 'normal run of the mill news programmes'. What Sky offered today was minimal.

However, I will wait until after watching a week of Sky 5 News before giving a more thorough verdict.

You see this is the CLEAR problem:

Just look at the difference in framing between Kirsty Young and the reporter.

It's clear for anyone to see.

Not just the framing, the studio picture looks considerably softer than the OB picture, whether through lighting or ARCing

I watched the opening of first look of Five News, and noticed how its gone down hill ever since. It looked very fast paced and youthful. This doesnt give me the same feeling, mainly its those colours.

I think that would be very wise advice for everyone on here before coming out with statements like ''ITN did it better'' and ''It isn't what it was''.

I think what we can safely say is that it wasn't a disaster, the content was solid, and the breadth of coverage from Asia - reports from Thailand and Indonesia, and a live from Phuket - would not have been achieved under ITN's contract.

I'm finding it someone baffling to see people basing their opinions on their entire news service on just 30 minutes. Ironically, a Five bulletin never suffered this much scrutiny from TVF when it was in the ITN days... I imagine if it had, there would've been just as many, if not more, faults to pick at.

Thats interesting, as Kirsty is actually standing on the stairs, but you can see the stairs continuing to the balcony. Maybe tomorrow it will be used more, as it is the day all returns to normal.

Nice to see a Jib in another news studio! (ITV1 have one, and BBC Three used to - when they shared facilities with Liquid News and Celebdaq)

Looking at the set I'd be surprised if Kirsty were allowed to continue up the stairs to the top balcony - certainly the screen left orange bit near the 3D logo. The railing looks very low - it can't have passed a risk assessment for "on-air" use can it?

(When a presenter is looking at a camera they are less aware of hazards around them - so what is acceptable in safety terms for a "normal" person might not be for someone looking to camera. It would certainly be dodgy for fast repositions and walking in-vision - unless there is a hidden safety structure we can't see.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the "top level" balcony was cosmetic - with the "halfway up the stairs" position the highest real presenting position?

After all - what would be gained from putting Kirsty on the top balcony in presentation terms - apart from a different shot for no reason?

Round of applause to Cat, honestly after trawling though pages of comments such as 'don't like this' and 'not as good as expected' I think you should cast your minds back to the last four years of ITN Five News, YES they had less money and YES they all worked very hard BUT this looks 100 times better than EVERYTHING ITN Five News produced from 2001-2004.

Points taken on board by noggin and a few others who CLEARLY KNOW what they are talking about but the rest I just find incredible that such snap judgements can be made on 25 minutes of television.

Here's Five Facts -
1) It looks so much better than the crap ITV News churn out daily...
2) The studio has depth and a BIG feel compared to the BBC National News broom cupboard...
3) There will be NO POINTLESS WALKING AROUND (ITV News anyone!)
4) The weather graphics will changes later in the year
5) Give it a week if you don't like it fine, but don't just slag it off give it a chance for christ sake.

The 5th wasn't a fact but hey Wink

Anyone notice on the five news update just now that the bar at the bottom had 'fivenews update' and nothing else for the duration of the programme?

My initial reaction and current reaction is that I still think the new studio is awful. The previous studio wasnt great and was indeed very boring and lacking everything! But at least on a colour-front it was acceptable.

These new colours really do not suit a serious news studio (not sure why)and they are making me feel nauseus. And i'll reitterate that it does remind me of a Newsround/Alive and kicking studio from yesteryear.

The actual studio is much more intricate than the previous one and i do like the layout of the studio but the stairway seems to block a portion of the wall - which otherwise would've been quite a nice shot to use. The big screen is a great addition as is the plasma glass thingy behind the presenter.

The music is inoffensive and will probably grow on me but it will take many listenings.

Graphics are fine. The colour doesnt seem as grotesque on the graphics and astons as it does within the studio!

Some neat camera angles but the main camera on Kirsty seemed either slightly out of focus, didnt have enough contrast and was poorly framed.

I would like to see how everything works with studio guests and possibly some breaking news!
